2004 Mazda RX-8
hi
Just bought a 2004 RX-8. Were can I get new map updates cheap for the car? I also live in NY and can anyone tell me what size, model, and type rims and tires I should use for the snow? Love this car!! Thanks for any help.

Welcome. Not sure about the map updates, but I don't think there is a cheap fix.

For winter rims, most 17" rims will fit (5x114 bolt pattern) and 17" tires are much cheaper. Check Craigslist in your area to see if there are any for sale. Read through the stickies in my sig for a lot of basic information that you will want to know to keep your new baby running. There is even a post in the "Have questions about an RX8" thread about some of the "wintertime issues" that you will run into. Froth on the dipstick and the surging engine when its really cold come to mind.

If you have questions read those two stickies then ask away. Post some pics if you can.

Make sure your car is warmed up completely before redlining it in the winter. You don't need to let it idle until its fully warmed, but at least give it a good 30 seconds before you drive off.

Invest in a oil temp gauge, a stock RX-8 takes about ten minutes at idle to get warmed up. You don't have to let it idle until she is fully warmed up but definitley do not go over 4,000RPM until she is warmed up. Where the factory coolant temp gauges shows warm, the oil is not to temp usually. Revving when cold is a no no, and if you must do short trips try to make sure she is warmed up first.

You may also want to look into premixing and definitely make sure you are on top of maintenance. The RX-8 is no Civic in terms of reliability.

That said, my RX-8 is almost 7 years old has 119,000 miles on her and still turns heads :)
