JL XR650cs Tweeter Problem

:
2001 323 Astina SP20 (P5)
Hey guys, Got an issue with one of my JL XR650cs Tweeters.

Every now and then the sound from it cuts out for short periods of time and sometimes for bloody ages. I checked the wiring to make sure it was tight and no problems.

The only way (works most of the time, but not all) is to quickly crank up the sound and most of the time it kicks back in.

Any idea what the problem could be??? ie crossover screwed, tweeter screwed etc...

thanks

Hmm...that sound like one of two things.

Tweeter screwed, or crossover screwed. :D

If it's the tweeter it means the magnet is loose, but functional. The increase in power to it may shake it into place. You may be getting the effect from a temp change, too.

If it's the cross over...hmm..I'm not sure why it would be. Increasing signal and it responding well would be the sign of a voltage regulator, capacitor or resistor being bad...at least for basic parts. I'm not sure what else is in a crossover, but one f the elctronic components may be *poofed*. If you bought the speakers from a dealer just contact JL's support, or the place you bought them from. Either way it doesn't sound like something you can fix. Seems like a defect in the set.

I have the XR's in the front of my P5, when the tweets are kicking off it's the crossover telling you to turn down the music, the crossover filter is protecting the tweet from frying out. If you want it to cut out at a little higher frequency adjust the +- db inside the crossover. You still will get it cutting at a certain frequency though.

The thing is...if he gives it more power they come back, so I don't think it's the safety. It could be though...he'll have to experiment.

Try seeing when it happens most often (ie what song/type of music, how the weather is, etc.) If it's entirely random, then it's a mechanical/electrical fault.

If it only cuts out at high volumes its a protection circuit which even the amps can have built in.
If it happen at any volume level then its wiring or a component failure.

I agree that it's a wiring or component failure. If it was the crossover cutting the signal from the speaker then it wouldn't come back in when you turn the volume up. You might try switching the wires going from the amp to the tweeters first. It could just be a bad wire. It's not going to be the wire going from your head unit to the amp because that would effect all of your other speakers.

Actually now that I think about it, I adjusted the crossover on the amp about two months ago, and haven't really noticed any cutting ot anymore. And no it's not physically impossible to blow these speakers, I've gone through 3 pair.

1551 - it mainly happens are low volumes :(

all - it's entirely random...i think i'll try just swapping the tweeter with another tweeter in the car...i have another 3 in the car (hehe) ... hopefully that'll rule out the x-over.

it has to be a problem from the x-over to the tweeter only because te woofer works fine...i think i'll have to go testing

thanks guys

thanks.

i'm taking the head and intake manifold outta my car this weekend, while it's getting ported etc i'm going to have a look into the speaker issue. fingers crossed it's just a dodgy connection between the x-over and the tweeter. that'll be nice. i'll let you know what i find.

Make sure you don't have the mid and tweeter wires reversed.

so would having the wires mixed up stuff up the tweeter and woofer in anyway?

i'll check the wires and test it all out tomorrow
