J&S Safeguard Install?

Thanks guys. I got it all hooked up last night. Took it for a spin and it worked great. I increased my timing from 35 to 42 and still didnt see any knocking. It pulls like a sonuvabitch. Everyones input has helped me out! (breakn)

Is anyone able to measure the dimensions of the J&S unit? I'm thinking about places to mount it.

This is one thing that I would love to get in the near future. Its good to see some people providing info on what settings are working.

Cheers.

The unit itself is 5" x 4". Add 3/4" to each side for the mounting flanges. So total would be 5" x 5 1/2". I have mine mounted in the passsenger side dash where the air bag used to be. Glove box is a great spot as well.

Edit: its about 3/4" thick.

Anyone know the knock sensor stud thread pitch and lentgh??

Hey Louis, here is a pic of the stock piece. I would like to think its still under there somewhere. I would think you might throw a cell if it was unhooked, but I dont know???? I still cant figure out why it would have been jacked with anyway.

I am still Googling the thread size for you. I am not coming up with much on it. Another option would be to take a tap and grind off the tapered end of it. Make your own thread size in there. Its kinda shallow, but as long as the stud stays put you will be fine.

I'll keep looking. If I come up empty, I might crawl under there and measure the one I got for you.

Here's where I put mine:

Does anyone know which wire goes to pin 1 on the knock sensor connector?

Try search how to turbo knock sensor
I'm sure I noted the signal wire there

Is this the thread? Knock light

Good info but it doesn't help me. The previous owner ripped the connector for my J&S knock sensor off. I have all the parts, I just need to know which wire goes to pin 1 on the knock sensor connector. Thanks.

I dont think polarity of the sensor matters. One is ground and the other goes to the J&S. Just be sure to test the unit by hooking everything up and temporarily cap the vac sensor. Tap on the sensor with a wrench to simulate knocking. Watch the unit light up. Then install everything and set the sensitivity.

I found the a pic on the J&S website. Tapping the sensor didn't work, but holding it on the valve cover did. Looks like I am good to go!

how far up was your sensitivity when tapping on it?

After mine was all setup and dialed in, the sensitivity ended up being just over halfway.

Sensitivity was all the way up. Hopefully I will get the sensor installed on Saturday and get the settings dialed in.

i just bought a safeguard and am having some issues with it. i was hoping to get the proper settings to make it work for me. i was told that there may be a few weird things that need to be done to install it on a P5. is this true?

do i leave the vacuum line unplugged?

i know i dont have to hook up the voltage clamp, but are there advantages to having the voltage clamp on the MAF or O2? I have an AEM wideband and an E6X. so does it matter?

is there anything i should know for dip switch settings? I read at the bottom of the page that dip 5 "MUST" be down. WHY? (i have it that way, but am just curious).

26 psi! jeez

I think I have usually been one to give a bit of helpfull advice on the J&S system since I've been using it for so long.
I just recently re-did my exhaust with a boost activated cutout and my Pope DP. In the process I ripped the wires out of the knock sensor connector.

I had been having very random issues (1 out of 100 times) getting into full boost before I yanked the wires from the knock sensor. Feels like the j&s is pulling alot of timing but no activity on the gauge and no cel. With the key on the gauge does its little test pattern of lights and on cold starts it will flicker for a sec or two so I know it's working and I also am using the midrange timing retard function and have never had any problems.

I went to re-solder my sensor connector and had to strip back about 6" of wire since the two leads were basically fused together being in the front of the block and even closer to the new dp.

What did you find out was your problem?? This happens almost everytime I get into boost now unless I ease into it. Maybe my solder connections for the sensor are somehow arcing with the heat???
Has anyone found a location on the back of the block for the knock sensor?? Or am I missing something??

So, do you know for sure it works with the vac line while having the E6x on it? I am trying to figure out why mine wont go past 3000 rpm with a little bit of boost. As I understand it, the J&S is "kicking in" at that point. Odd thing is that the LED's werent lighting up and the sensitivity was way down. My timing is set to how it came from Hi-Boost's pre-mapped settings (35 degrees advanced max before boost).

I hope nothing happened when it fused/ welded itself together. The short may have done some damage to the internals or something???Is there any way to tell if the sensor lost contact with ground when the wires ripped out?

I re-soldered again after trimming back the leads closer to the shield and adjusted the sensitivity down a bit oddly and the gauge is working normally...now I need to turn it down a little more and give it a few good runs. Some point I had my sensitivity to high almost 3/4 when I checked today so may have been doing some weird things thankfully :)
