Once again as I go to do an oil change I end up under my car for 3 hours.
First the oil filter is damn near impossible to move as always so i wrestle with that for 1/2 hour until I can get enough raw torque on ito to move it.
As it finally starts to loosen up I get it half way off and then

SPARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep thats right electrical sparks start shooting.
Of coarse I get the hell out form under the car ASAP and get the battery disconnected.

So atleast I know no matter what happens I have that going for me.

I get back under the car and my 1/0 wire to the alternator is nice and warm. I disconnect it an sure enough the damn thing had warn out down to the crimp connection and grounded to the alternator chassis.

I retaped it, added loom, taped more, added a small stip of metal and taped more.

That will never gorund out agian :D

Wow that sucks. Glad nothing bad came out of that. I don't konw how people are having such bad times with their oil filters. I just use a leather work glove to put mine on and remove. I also also go down from the top instead of reaching from under the car. The leather glove give lots of grip I find. The only thing I do wrong is misjudge where I need to have th oil pan whenever I take off the Filter and have the big oily mess to clean up. Why can't they devise a better place for that filter so there's no oil running downt he side of the block and oil pan. Oh well. Atleast you reminded me it's time to change my oil. Gettin round the 4000 mark.

Use Purolator Pure One filters. The end is made so you can put one of those, umm, dunno what the hell you call em. The little cap that slips over the end and you can put a ratchet on it. Makes taking it off very easy.

thats what i use, and once i had the end strip on me. Damn things. I follow the instructions, 1 turn after contact. I have two wrenches, one is a band type and the other is the cup that you put on a ratchet. I use the ratchet first if that doesnt work then i use the band one.

Thank you for your concers. I wish I had video taped it. You have never seen someone spring out form under a car so fast in your life! :D

OK you guys are missing th point of the thread.

MY CAR ALMOST EXPLODED!

I am well aware what a filter wrench can do but I seldom need it, however it would not have stopped me from pissing myslef when SPARKS started shooting around my arm as I was tuning the oil filter.

I didn't know wether to get a fire exstiguisher or run like hell!

That sucks man.. That is the reason I pay $23 and get it done..It take like 20 mins and they top off all the fluids and a full service wash..

lol reminds me of when i had an electrical "fire" in my trunk- all the plastic on the wires melted and it was smoking white i had the estinguisher out, ready to use, and the handle BROKE! good thing i didnt end up needing it- i had already cut my power wires in the trunk!

glad to hear you are still safe man. What caused the wire to get eaten away and ground itself??corrosion? Have had a similiar experience except mine was more shocking ...literally. was working on my carb on myold jeep and in the process of climbing around inside the engine bay I accidentally rested my hand with my trusty ratchet down near some cables. Well accidentally hit the contact on one and the body with the other end of the ratchet. OUCH talk about hurting like a sob. but I freaked because I was working with the gas lines and such to the carb and all I could think was kaboom.

BTW if you ever have a oil filter that you just cannot get off here is what you do. Get a really big oil pan and some shop towels and put them under the car. then take the biggest phillips head screwdriver you have and punch a whole straight through the filter entering one side and out the other. then just grip each side of the crewdriver and tunr the whole thing. Whola the old filter is off. Yes it's messy but when the filter is stuck it gets the job done.

The wire rubs on the actual alternator chassis which would not have mattered mutch if there was slitloom on that section of wire but there wasn't only tape then the crimp connection. The actaul crimp hit the alternator very slightly. Good thing they weren't making really good contact since it has a 300 amp fuse inline.
