VW actually has the best dash lights.

I hear you there.

I'd rather have the turbo 4 that makes more torque and has a wider powerband then a v6 that takes 87.

The way I see it is both vehicles look good. Yes the chrome is a bit much of the ford but the front of the mazda isnt all that great either. Mazda has always used ford parts and ford mazda. I personally would not want a turbo 4 in my SUV. Ill take the V6. Both will get the same MPG but with the V6 you dont have to use the 91+ octane. That alone will is almost enough. That and fords build quality is just as good as mazda. Another thing that ford has over the mazda is the cx7s ugly ass red dash lights. I just hate red lights, and my greenish lights in the protg. VW actually has the best dash lights.

I wouldn't say Ford builds cars AS GOOD as Mazda, but they're getting better. One of the reasons Ford took controlling share of Mazda was because they wanted to learn from Mazda's QC. Sure some parts are of questionable quality. But I'm sure Mazda parts procurement team inspects and rejects parts they deem subpar- even if they do come from Ford. Good parts is good parts. It's all in the way they're utlitized and screwed together that makes the difference.

Whether you admit it or not, the two vehicles compete for market share and are pointed to the same demographic. Mazda will always have the lower volume car and be on the advanced edge of the available technology. Ford is absolutely convinced its customers do not want to be early adopters of technology. There is a history of great R&D projects inside FoMoCo that have been killed becuase the "market didn't bear out the cost of production." In fact, according to a recent study, FoMoCo spends more on R&D than ANY OTHER CAR COMPANY....including GM and Toyota. Mazda on the other hand appeals to progressive individuals who WANT something a little different and are impressed by a small engine that performs well in a well engineered package. We would all find similarities in that we desire a higher level of perceived quality in our cars than a typical Ford buyer. I know several Ford engineers and Execs both former and current and this opinion comes from them, not my fertile imagination.

The Edge is a direct competitor to the CX-9 coming out later...they both share the same chassis and engine.

Nope... it still has one major down fall...... it is still a Ford...... also, the pricing almost seems higher than the CX7... mine is the Grand Touring with the Tech Package... and all other goodies (except all wheel drive) and I paid a little over $30,000 and the SEL FWD is $28,000 and no navi.....
The Edge is manufactured @ Ford's mexico plant and it's been getting the highest quality numbers(in that it's made from more durable materials/parts) than any ford in the past 10years or so.

I don't like all the chrome up front in the grille.
yeah.. idk why, but it reminds me of the grille off a Cadillac CTS

The Edge does not have 3 rows of seats...it is a 5 seater. the CX-9 while on the same chassis with similar powertrain is a 7 seater. The Edge is positioned as a young persons lifestyle vehicle as is the CX-7. The CX-9 is a replacement for minivans ands larger 7 passenger sport-utes in the Mazda lineup. Ford will be coming out with another crossover (shown as the Fairlane concept in Detroit last year) with 7 passenger capacity. IT will be in the same class as the CX-9.
