Is tuning necessary with the following mods:

Hi,

First post in these forums and not being familiar with these cars (i just bought my ms3 a month ago for a dd and it has 2400 miles on it now) I would like some guidance so I don't make an expensive mistake. I have just finished installing a Cobb SRI, Corksport race pipe and catback. Do I need a tune to be sure my a/f ratio is safe or can I run it as is.
I also have an '04 Cobra and during the early stages of modding that, similiar mods (intake/exhaust) required no additional tune since the car was programmed pig rich (as this one seems to be) in its factory tune. Turbo cars I have no experience with so I need some savvy advice.
I will say though, I am quite impressed with what these 2 mods have already done for the car--it pulls pretty strong for a little 4-banger !!

Thanks and cheers to all for creating a great website !!

Get a Dashawk for future reference as you continue to mod. It will let you know when your numbers start to go out of spec.

Thanks all. I particularly like your response ms3jake. Short and gets the job done ! Being to lazy (and time constrained) to search, what a/f ratios should I be looking for under boost. I'm guessing in the mid 11's perhaps ?.

It actually goes richer as the RPM's go up ... on my MS6 (MS3 s/b the same) it goes down to very low 10's and I've even seen 9.9X.

Me too before the XEDE. I have a conservative tune and see ~11.5 WOT near redline...

To the OP, Define "necessary"...

FORZDA 1,

Buy "necessary" I mean, must you have the car tuned after these mods to prevent it from leaning out too much under boost.

I'm a lazy sob because after searching last night I found all the answers to my original question in about 10 minutes. It looks like Mazda took plenty of precaution in their factory tune to prevent lean conditions with bolt on mods--they knew damn well gearheads were going to mess with these cars !!

i have damn near every mod on the market and i am untuned. to be honest...the most powerfull disi mzr car i have ever seen is untuned as well. he dynoed 366AHP on a speed6 ! the stock ecu rocks on this car, it just need a map clamp so you can run higher boost levels and something to give us throttle control.

maybe. some people see higher levels of boost from those mods. i would get a new fuel pump, thats for sure !! if after that you get cut a map clamp will stop it. it is hard to say for sure, uz some people get cut and others dont. my car stated cutting with very few mods

Hey tru, was a boost clamp the answer for you and if so how much did the ecu see and what is actual? I think you have answererd this before but I have forgotten already, sir.

right now i run 21 psi and the ecu sees 13 !! in the winter i have to only let it see 10 or it cuts in the cold

Thank you, I am delighted you are successful with your car! That is a bit more performance horsepower than I can handle yet but sure is great to know it is available to tap into without one of the bad things happening.
