Just got off the phone with dude at TireRack.com
After weeks of debating wether to get rims or just new tires for my stock p5 rims (6") I decided to get tires only.
I was reading on our forum here that people have done 205/45/16 on the stock rim.

The guy at tire rack said that was definatlely not recomended because I would get abnormal tire wear and bad handling due to the fact that the tire is too big for the rim

(eekdance)
How true is this?
Does anyone have this application on their p5? (205/45/16 on stock rim?)

If so how is it riding?
Do you notice abnormal wear?

my bro has the prada spec II 205's on his and he has no problems with it, it is'nt that much bigger over stock

Yeah, I've ran that size on my stock wheels before. No problem here.

so the abnormal wear is not a factor?
and the salesman said that therer would be "pinch" because the tire is is made for a 6 1/2" rim not the 6" that comes on our cars stock.

also
besides visual asthetics, is there any benefits from increasing the width, I know in theory, wider is better, but do you actually detract from increased grip if ur tires are larger than the rim?

i have a set of firestone firestorms 205/45/16 on my stock rims. i get much better traction with them than i did with the stocl 195's and i must say that they look better as well.

I have Nitto Neogen's in 205/45/16 and I haven't experienced any negative effects. The car literally sticks to the road, I love them over stocks. Also, they look better too; sleek low profile.

A comparo:

Unfortunately these pics aren't the best for comparison but the benefit of the larger width as well is they often have lips that protect your rims.

Well, he's right -- there will be some "pinch". The question is, will it be enough to cause an increased risk of failure or premature wear on the tire? I think that it's highly unlikely.

I plan on getting 205/45/16 on my P5 when the stocks wear out mostly because there are very few good 195/50 tires out there.

Id go with a 205/50 on the stock rim to be careful. That's what I had and had no problems.

I'm running 195/55 on my stock rims. That is what came on the car when I bought it. There is more wear on the outside of the front tires but I think its b/c I haven't yet rotated them. I tried to do it myself but I couldn't break the lugs....I practically jumped on the crowbar and nothing happened. The tire place just told me that I'm supposed to go w/ 195/50. IS this how it works:
First number is sidewall width....higher number is taller tire. Second number is tire width.....higher number is more narrow? I'm not sure how it works.....help.

elias1974, I think while the 205/45 would be better on a wider rim, the Tire Rack guy was a bit off to say "definitely not." I think you'll be fine. Also, besides being wider, the 205/45 will be a tad shorter in overall diameter, effectively gearing you down, resulting in slightly quicker acceleration from a stop.

man,
i appreciate all the response, very helpful indeed,
what I wanted to know is, while the extra width may help to protect the rim lip, will it also cause the tire to be more prone for developing a bubble?

is the handling noticeably better / less better / or indifferent from stock?

I was leaning toward the Khumo ECSTA ASX (ASX for All-Season Xtreme)
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Ecsta+ASX
Tires for there good reviews and great price...anyone with experiences with these? I want to get an all season tire cause I know I will forget all about geting snows in the winter and probaly be broke anyway...

finally, I wanted to add road hazard on these at $8.50/ extra a tire, I am wondering if geting a non-stock tire will riase a flag with the sales man and void any possible road hazard protection...

FYI.... it turns out that all Sears Auto dept. stores can order just about any tire you want and will price match as long as you have a printed out total of the same item.

I had 205/45/17's on stock wheels with Jic Magic coilovers on my first Protege sedan. Tires were Yokohama AVS ES-100's. I tore the crap out of those tires. I was making 45 degree corners at 50MPH. Just insane stress on those tires. They never bubbled and I never had any problems. If my extreme driving did not destroy a tire than your everyday driving will not hurt this size tires. No worries

45degree turn at 50...haha, u make me laugh...I take 90 degree turns at 50 (laugh)....ok, not really, lol.

regardless of width and hieght on any type of tire, from 15 to 26 inch-hard driving means hard wear, that salesman was blowin smoke, you came to the right place for answers, and prolly got them already so why am i adding o the post?

I would have tried a 90 degree but I would have killed myself. Not that I already haven't tried.:D
