Is the Transfer Case issue resolved or not?

:
CX9
Hello All,

New to the forum, because I am just looking to purchase a CX9. I can get a great deal on a 2014 CX9 demo with AWD. I have done a bunch of research and know that as of 2012 Mazda Bulletin 03-001/12 specifies a new part number for the transfer case for 2007 - 2012 models...has this solved the problem on 2014 models and beyond? I would think that at least a couple would have crapped out by now if its still an issue. There are a few FWD units I can also get, but I would rather have the AWD for safety, but not if I'm going to be worried about the transfer case going out...I keep my vehicle to 100,000 and beyond. I may aske them to extend the warranty to 100,000....

Thanks!

The new transfer case is an entire new unit from a new company. I havent heard of any failures with the updated version yet. So id say yes, that issue has been resolved.

Hey monoxide, so it's not a Ford Edge transfer case anymore in my '14?

Ford and Mazda are both using the same updated transfer case. Neither is a "Edge" transfer case really. They both just get the same one from the same distributor. Neither was a Ford or Mazda sourced part to begin with.

Ahhh, I see. Makes sense obviously, that it wasn't technically a Ford part. Thanks

Also, maybe the OP has that PN, as he mentioned it was specified in the TSB 03-001/12

Hi Voldsom,

got it

looks like any CX-9 after 11/28/2012 got the latest transfer case ? p/n AW21-27-500K-9U

Awesome, thanks avidien! Great find.
Good news for my 02/2014 build date, let's hope AW21-27-500k-9U is a winner :) I'll still plan on maintaining it like it's gonna fail (fluids swapped every ~30k or so), but it's good to know it's at least different so all the 2008 owners with 100k and three transfer cases are in a different situation. Also, I'm surprised it's only quoted as a 2.3 hr job (although with three guys). Those TSB letters tend to tell you the REAL time it will take, not what your service manager quotes you, lol.

Hi Voldsom,

Can you do us a huge favor and post pics & instructions when you do your transfer case fluid swap at 30k miles? I'm planning to do it also but can't find the step by step instructions with pictures anywhere. Thanks in advance.

Deal. Not sure if I'll get there first though, as I should only be doing about 10k miles a year, that puts me into 2017 as the likely time I'll do it, lol.

If i went FWD, then the CX9 wouldnt have been the vehicle i purchased. I deal with winter for almost half the year. So buying a new car, and not going AWD would be a waste of money. And im too poor to move somewhere warmer. lol

same for me, I have to deal with the winter also, so no way I would drive a 7 passenger vehicle without AWD in the snow.
Also a brand new 7 passenger CX-9 with tech package, Bose, AWD, and sunroof
for $32k with the cash back/0% 5 year APR Mazda was offering , nothing even came close to price and CX-9 sleek styling, power and handling.

so I'll just have to deal with transfer case fluid change maintenance, also got the Mazda letter about transfer case warrantied to 60K for peace of mind and Geico mechanical breakdown insurance which will cover it.

at the time, I was also considering the new Pathfinder, glad I didn't, just google 2013/2014 Pathfinder CVT transmission, those transmissions are blowing out left and right. and the new Highlander priced out at $38K is just butt ugly with that ugly grill and tailights,

Uhhhg, CVT's are the worst... That took about half the vehicles I was looking at out of contention based on that alone.

I here you...even though we had a terrible winter, here in jersey we maybe have 5 days where we need AWD....I have an ML350 that I can use then if I need to...I bought the CX9 because it was the best riding, nicest looking, and sweetest interior I could get for the money I spent
