Is Mazda The New Porsche?

In an article published in the August 2010 issue of Grassroots Motorsports magazine, staffers Wayne and Will Nonnamaker posed the question of whether “Mazda, particularly their Mazdaspeed division, (is) replacing Porsche as the go-to brand in the hearts and minds of sports car enthusiasts”. Having campaigned Porsches and Corvettes for many years as members of Team Sahlen, their current racing stable consists exclusively of Mazdas, more particularly Mazdaspeed 3’s and RX-8’s.

The authors start by giving props to Mazda owners by saying that “having a Mazda in your garage today designates you as a true gearhead. It’s a brand that has fostered its own cult of sorts. It’s amazing the number of fans that come up to us at the track and share the details of their own Mazdas. It’s almost like there’s a code of passage between members of the Mazda family.”

The article then proceeds to draw several similarities between the two marques with regards to their motorsports programs, then goes on to answer their own query by stating that Mazda ever truly replacing Porsche is a lofty goal, but more importantly though, “it’s nice to see another manufacturer who understands how to deliver a car with heart and soul, a suspension that takes a corner with panache, a muffler that has a little bit of a roar to it, and a transmission that feels tight and precise.”

They conclude the article by stating that “Porsche isn’t going away anytime soon, as the firm knows how to build fantastic street and race cars. Mazda is closing the gap, however, as Zoom-Zoom is more than just a marketing slogan.”

More like Mazda is the new Mazda. Its always been more accessible then the other 2 and way cheaper to build a respectable mazda (Miata) then the other 2. Everyone else is finally getting what we already knew.

Yup.

Mazda has always been an enthusiast's brand. Back in the day, it was merely overshadowed by Honda and Nissan in the tuning/racing scene, but while those companies have strayed quite a bit from their "sporty" roots, Mazda is still right on the ball.

If you've driven the Mazda2 and current Miata, you'd know this. Amazing fun to drive. Can't wait for someone to open up a Spec Mazda2 class... :D

I must admit, I was a bit disappointed with the Mazda3 when it first came out, but it's getting better. The NC MX-5 was also slightly disappointing, but the facelift just wipes the floor with the old car... and, besides... the worst MX-5 (NC gen 1) is still twice as good as the best of the rest.

funny, I find Mazda has lost it's way a little in the past few years. Not quite as much as Honda or Toyota but still.

I would consider Mazda to be the Japanese version of BMW. Because both manufacturers run more cars in race series than another manufacturer.

Mazda might be also replacing Porsches and BMWs mostly because of overall maintenance costs (even with a good sponsor all parts can get way up)

how do you figure?

the Miata remains an icon; the RX-8 has received many accolades (such as Motor Trend naming it the 4th best handling car in the US behind only the Audi R8, Nissan GT-R, & BMW M3, and US News & World Report naming it the 4th best affordable sports car behind the Miata, Hyundai Genesis, & Nissan 370Z); the 2010 Mazda3 is also receiving many accolades, with many reviewers comparing it favorably to much-more expensive BMWs (in terms of things like handling especially), and with Car & Driver naming it a 10 Best for the year (alongside the Miata, the 3-series/M3, the Porsche Boxster, & the Audi S4, to name a few); the 2010 Mazdaspeed3 is also well-regarded and routinely beats everything but the VW GTI in comparison tests.

if anything, I think Mazda is in a much better position than it was 10 or even 6 years ago (before the 3 and the RX-8 went on sale). according to the CorkSport Blog, Mazda has larger market share than BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Volkswagen. and, supposedly, more Mazdas are raced every day than any other make.

And then there is the ridiculous support that MazdaSpeed give to those who run Mazdas

Well, for starters the Mazda Rx-7 was replaced with a four door non turbo rx-8
The Mazdaspeed Protege Sedan was replaced with a "hatch"
The Mazda 6 was a fun to drive sporty sedan that has now been fattened up and bloated for the american Market = not as much fun anymore. And it's american built now = sucks. And no Mazdaspeed 6 in sight anymore...damn.
The miata, while I think it's certainly better looking then before has also been eating too much and getting bigger but not really any more powerful.

Then there's the smiley plague, and the lack of support from Mazda to actually FIX Mazdaspeeds issue which is why I left them after having 3 of their cars that never had any of their issues actually taken care of.

Just how I see it. I think in early 2000's they were on a roll, but in the last few years they are going down the same road every other Japanese automaker goes down...cough Honda/Toyota.

It sounds like someone's perspective is being obfuscated by a personal bias against Mazda for not fixing your vehicles' so-called issues!

There's a logical reason that Mazda replaced the MSP with the MS3 - turbo hatches are popular, and they're competing against the STI hatch, the GTI, etc. (and besides, the MS3 is a much better car than the MSP - faster & more powerful; stiffer, stronger chassis; etc.). The RX-8, while non-turbo, is one of the best sports cars in America, low-end torque and gas mileage issues notwithstanding. You may not like the new "smile" design, but it's clearly not stopping people from buying and loving the new vehicles, especially the 3, which, iirc, is the best-selling car in Canada.

Just because you don't like the direction Mazda is heading, it doesn't mean it's the wrong direction!

Yeah, I read that article, too. It was a good read, and it sure felt true at Mid-Ohio in the Mazda corral for the recent EMCO Gears Classic races.
