big_ben said:There is a huge difference in the 8.1:1 CR on the DSM motor and the 9.1;1 on the Protege. That's the reason we can only go up to about 8psi without some aftermarket timing control. But here's the kicker, our cars use coil packs and not just any timing control unit will work. The only ones that will work are basically piggyback ECU's like the link. The cheap ones that MSD and Jackson Racing make won't work. Also the rods are rumored to be weak on this car. Only about 2 people have broken a rod so far though.
1st Generation DSMs 90-94 have 7.5:1 comp.
2nd Generation DSMs 95-99 have 8.5:1 comp.
2nd gens can still run 20 psi without any problems with a 8.5:1 engine.
Me thinks that you could run 14 psi if the bottom end was beefy enough which I guess from what you are saying it isnt.
