Is downshifting to slow down bad for the clutch?

Downshifting to slow down is call engine braking. It's a common practice that many manual drivers use. I personally don't use it, cuz I don't think engine braking is good for the engine, cuz you're forcing the engine to slow the car down, instead of using the brakes which is what they were designed for. Replacing something internal like transmission or an engine component is always more expensive than brake. that's my 2 cents

its not the clutch id worry about with downshifting... clutches can take the abuse..id worry about your synchros... $$$$

Won't hurt synchros, the only thing I would worry about, if not properly rev-matching is the clutch and the thrust bearings in the engine.

if you rev match you wont use the synchros much, if at all...but if you dont your putting wear on them
