Is anyone running 550 watts rms in a protege?

I have a JL 250/1 and 300/2. My car's electrical system seems to take a crap when the stereo is used (variable 12-25 amp load usually), even though it has no trouble with a 40 amp continuous load from a/c and lights.

Just wondering if anyone has been fine with this car's alternator...

yeah get a new amp kit the car can handle it fine i'm running over 2000 watts on a 4 gauge kit with no problems

sounds like you need a cap for the amp

I ran 550ish. You really shouldn't have a problem not running a cap. but that's not to say you won't see improvements if you do get one. I recommend strongly that you take apart your rear deck and remove the deck speaker blocks (black pieces of plastic where deck speakers should be) and get some 1/4" thick weatherstripping between the plastic deck lid and actual metal deck. Apply dynamat by hitting the trunk with your fist to route out the rattles. I also put dynamat over the holes where the speaker blocks were. This will greatly improve your sound if you have the subs in the trunk and it only costs about 30$.

I'm running a 600 watt mono amp to 2-10" Alpine Type-R's and had the same problem. I bought an Optima yellow top battery and have had no problems since.....I would do the battery before I would do the cap

I'm running over 1300 watts RMS with an upgraded battery (not Optima though) and a 1.4 farad cap and yeah, I still have the same problem. I'm thinking I should get an Optima yellow top and another 1.4 farad cap. That should probably take care of it, lol.

Does anyone know of an alternator upgrade for our cars?

I've got a call in to a guy here in Houston and he's trying to find a high amp alternator for me, I'll let you know what I find out

yea I would look at getting a new battery. I'm running 500 rms to 2 12s and a second amp for the speakers 200 rms give or take. And I have had this in for right at 2yrs.

sorry, kinda forgot about this....the only way to get a higher voltage alternator is to have the stock one custom wound, sorry, maybe someday the aftermarket will make one, but as of now I doubt it.
