My problem with the war on terror/probable war on Iraq is that it will never be won. In fact, these wars will likely cause more problems.
The war on terrorism is very similar to the US war on drugs. The war on drugs is pretty much a failure. One cannot expect to erradicate all, or even most of the drug traffic into the United States. You bring down one organization or druglord, another one just steps into place and continues their work.
As for the war on terror, I make my comparison with a good quote by an excellent author - Gore Vidal, author of "Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace":
"We have a war on terrorism, which is a war both on an unknown enemy and an abstract noun. Therefore, its a war with no end, and its a war that cannot be won, and it bears a resemblance to the war on drugs for the same reason. And the question then is in whose interest are these wars?"
Have we killed Osama Bin Laden? No. Will we ever? Most likely not. What happens if we do? Somebody else will step in his place. And what happens if we overthrow Saddam and put a democracy in place? Are we going to put all of our money into making sure it works? I seriously doubt it.
Look at Afghanistan... Although the Taliban was a rather terrible regime, that country is in more disarray than it was before - worsened poverty, extremely dangerous, and a president who is not likely to live another year. Sure our media shows happy little girls in school for the first time in years, but how safe are they?
Whether we like it or not, our great country depends so heavily on Mid-Eastern oil, our government will do anything to get it. I hear so many people complaining that gas is $1.59 a gallon. Wow, I'd be willing to pay $5 a gallon knowing that my dollars didn't get cycled into the hands of terrorists.
People need to realize that there are other options to defeat an enemy that do not include war.
P.S. Good debate, and its nice to see people are keeping it clean!
