does anyone know dimentions of the ion or spool intercooler core? i'm wondering if a hks/apexi/blitz core would fit. thanks. and dont flame me please. im just curious.

And take some measurements yourself to find out if the core you want will fit.. pretty easy.

I personally think the whole FMIC thing is overated! If you are going to race and run above 15psi, then get one. Otherwise, our little black box will be fine. In addition to my MSP, I have a 90 Probe GT(engine by Mazda) that runs 10 psi in stage one and 14 psi in stage two. The engine has 187,000 on it. All internals are original. So is the turbo! Boost wisely and it will last.

jred321 - we've revised our initial manufacturing technique to sqeeze out another 0.5" in height

DAWIV - we look at a FMIC upgrade as cheap insurance. Just like premium fuel. These supporting parts increase the longevity of a motor under all situations. Why risk it and leave yourself with a large repair bill?

are you serious....i take it you never go fun running?....i do it sometimes and before i use to just hate them cause after a few runs my msp would just lag or feels slow.....but then came the fmic and its like viagra....well not all night lol.

The ion front mount is dyno proven for more horsepower(Jan 04 Turbo Magazine).. but then again, any upgraded intercooler will help.
IOn has a great product, but there are cheaper alternatives for the same results. Thats all im preaching!

nattyboy513 - no problem. We choose to design and have our own cores made b/c none of the JDM cores available suited our requirements in terms of being a thermal heat-sink. Most of the JDM cores are tube & fin, not as effective as a bar & plate set-up.

KyRaceFan - thanks however I wouldn't use the word "same" for results, results would be similar but not the same. Other cheaper alternatives have cores that are smaller or of tube and fin design, thus they don't provide as much thermal capacity for durations of time as long as ours.

FMIC are a good thing but not needed to make boost in our cars.
The intercooler in my Probe is identical to the MSP. The engine is stout and has not suffered any problems from the increased boost.

I love to race it, and will do the same with the MSP, once I finish what Mazda started.

I can think of better things to do with $1,000 than send it to a FMIC manufacturer. Just my opinion. They will gladly fill you with "marketing-puffery" and take your money.

Spend it if you have it! Just my opinion.

You're crazy. Even at stock settings the original "shoebox" intercooler gets heatsoaked easily. I'm sure you also think that a stock intake is better than a sri or cai also right? Think logically. Yes it might cost alot for a FMIC, but IMO it's well worth it to pay these companies for their quality and their R&D.

No, not crazy at all! Yes, a CAI is one of the best things that you can do for the MSP. So is a boost controller. Heat soak? Most of those articles where written before the "flash". I drive my MSP 130 miles a day round trip. No problems since the flash.

Like I said, $1,000 would be better spent elsewhere....forged internals, upgraded ECU, etc.

Its your dough! Just my opinion. My opinion is also based on having 187,000 miles on a Mazda shoebox! The engine has no problems.....

We're not talking about reliability here, we're talking about gains. Nobody said that the stock vs the aftermarket intercoolers were going to effect the life of your engine.
