nothing beats the sound of a rotary blowin up

Ken, I'd like to hear your hatch vs. sedan speech because I have a good feeling I'll actually be on your side for that one.

Regarding auto vs. manual - my gas mileage is great on the p5. And I haven't seen anyone w/a manual do better. And you forgot one thing in your heavily biased argument: resale. It's far easier to sell an automatic car than manual. You'll get more money for it, too (though probably not the 1K you spent for it at the beginning).

one can of worms is enough for one thread steve ;) i'll save the hatches VS less useful cars argument for later.

i'm not in agreement the argument was biased. i'll agree with you on resale with the caveat that these cars, and mazdas in general as a marque, have mediocre resale value at best. to be totally honest - and i do like my mazdas - if resale is a major concern here, mazdas are not the way to go. but yes, resale and trade-in tend to be more favorable when a slushbox is turning the tires.

So; Here's something I want to throw out there to all of you.

I am going to be getting my car in the fall (around September) because that is when the school will write me my refund check (around $2K). Originally I was just going to try and find a used Mazda 3 (around 10K)- Drop my 2K on it and find a loan and slowly pay off the rest each month.

My question is: Is it worth me finding a used car or should I go for a new car given the economy status and the fact that new cars usually have good deals on them right now?

If I go used- Whats a good dealership to look at? Should I go with a used car dealership that is unknown? Carmax?

What should I be looking for if I go with a used car? I know that Justin will be accompanying me and Joel when I go out to get my car and he said I should look for something that's between a 2004-2006 model.. but what else should I be weary about?

=] Thanks guys!

In most instanced used will be cheaper than new. I would look for a nicely maintained 04-06 with around 30k miles on it. And of course, you have to get a turbo kit!

carmax is great and typically sells decent used cars. they do have firm, and in my opinion high, pricing. don't expect a deal if thats your first goal in the process.

buying a brand new car in any economy is an absolute waste of money. lets face it, the only reason to buy a new car is to buy a new car. We all love the feeling and the new car odor. You lose thousands in value as soon as you sign the paper and turn the key. Let the market absorb that and get a low mileage used car. The warranty will be intact, you'll spend a fair bit less, and not end up as upside down as you normally would. And you'll still have a nice newer vehicle.

don't get caught up in resale value, projected trade values and investment quality. frankly all of that is semantic bulls*** used by the ad agencies to sell brand new cars of that marque. you need to buy the car that is right for you, the car that you enjoy. who cares if you can weasel a $1000 more from some poor sap for a camry versus a mazda6 five years down the line. if during those five years you weren't enjoying the car or it just plain wasn't right for you, then honestly none of that matters.

its real simple. buy a car you're going to enjoy. buy a car that isn't going to bankrupt you. buy a car that makes sense for your needs. and don't buy a car with the mentality that you'll be buying something new in five years. get a car thats going to last, pay it off and drive it into the earth. which honestly renders a lease irrelevant.

First: Thanks for your spill.
Second: I've heard good and bad things about Carmax. I figure they aren't bad to just take a look at and see what they have...
Third: I agree with you on the idea of the new car and how most people just get it for the new car smell. I simply was considering a new car because many people kept telling me that it would be a good idea given the economy (etc...) but I really don't feel comfortable buying a new car simply because of the fact it is going to cost more money and I feel like I have to be UBER careful with it; instead of a car that is lightly used..

I do know for a fact that after this weekend I am getting a Mazda3. I loved the way it drove, the size of it and everything! I know now that I need one with power everything cause I could NOT stand the fact that the car I test drove was mostly basic... Pissed me off not having cruise control. Plus the fact that it was an 08 with 34,000 miles on it made me feel a little uneasy to be spending 10K on it. I mean, it it was an 06 with 34,000 maybe? But having such high mileage on an 08 (granted it has to be mostly highway driving... but still)

Joel and I are going to look around Thursday + Friday night (if anyone is interested) at the dealers up there around Grayslake + surrounding cities to see what other dealers have. I'm hoping to find a dealer who will take in my summit for a price that matched the dealer from this weekend.

Ev and I may be able to tag along with you guys if you would like on Friday night. One of the cars Ev wil be looking at is also a used 3.

Wouldn't have mattered. We looked into that and my car gets 25mpg and it needs to be 18 or under. The dealer was just going to give me 1500 straight up so he could make the sale.

The video of the RX blowing up was hilarious, it sounded like some SFX noise in a Sci-Fi movie.

BTW
Hi and welcome to the forums Tee! I'm the guy who never makes it up to the Chicago area because I live in farmer town Champaign.
