Intercoolers are....cool

Here's a question: Intercoolers. What're people using to replace the stock POS? I imagine you guys who are boosting to the moon are using something pretty big, but I'm only looking to crank boost up to maybe 8 or 8.5 psi. Has anybody had success with a specific size cooler at that kind of boost? Something that will have the lowest possible pressure losses and still keep things cool. I can assume track speeds only for this application.

If you just want to boost a little more than stock look into Turbo Hoses SMIC and hard pipes ( www.**********.com ), it will raise your factory boost and improve drivability.

Hmmm....well the fact that I learned just about everything I know about proper intercooler design from the writings of Corky Bell, I guess the BEGI one would be silly to disregard. Thanks for the tip.

Hiboost is really good.
But if you only plan to boost to 8.5, a SMIC would be enough. It will cost you around $500. But compair to the FMIC you will save 50%.

actually you have but you cant see it because your wastegate and boost gauge are fed off the cold side of the intercooler therefore your turbo is working harder to open the wastegate because there is a big fmic in the way

I agree! CustomMSP also makes a great smic and its cheaper!

smic 4 for if your staying under 10psi. I love my begi though, especially at 10+psi, it cannot even be compared to the performance of the stock interwarmer and flows better than the others.

smic for sure if your staying under 10psi. I love my begi though, especially at 10+psi, it cannot even be compared to the performance of the stock interwarmer and flows better than the others.

turbohoses kit!

That is pretty. Might need to go side-mount then. How much is thermal efficiency improved? Also, does anybody know what kind of pressure losses are actually being caused by the stock IC?

Not to jack the thread, but i have 2 questions...a SMIC is only fgood for 10 lbs or under??? And does a FMIC require any modification that is major to put on a MSP??

depends on what smic and what sized turbo. Some FMIC kits like perrin require cutting while others like the BEGI are bolt in. Of course you have to take the front of the car apart.

that is a SMIC kit. a front mount will be larger, but pipe plumbing is more complex and a bit harder to install, although it's not "that" hard, it just takes alot longer.

i gained almost 1psi just by changing the stock smic out. i was holding boost at 5psi and now i am holding at 6psi. again, i'm measuring this on a boost gauge, to be 100% accurate how much psi is being put through is in question too.

Cool, because as soon as I pick mine up from the dealership, I'd like to up the boost. When I test drove it, I felt it more in lower gears than in higher gears..I was planning on upgrading the BOV, IC, and maybe getting a CAI...but, I am paying for this car in cash, so, I have a small budget for a few weeks..or months..lol.

Now do you notice any HeatSoak at all? And do you hold Boost better with that SMIC?

Im looking for something for under 10+ PSI but I odnt know which way I should go...........

easy, read the first page of this thread over and then do a search on smics

like Aric said, I carry Mental Addiction, BEGi and HiBoost intercooler kits. Contact me if you want more information and perhaps a forum discount :D
