Installed Injen CAI question about noise (non turkey related)

Just installed my Injen CAI. Took about 90 minutes (only because its hot as hell outside and I took many breaks)

First mod on the car and it's a noticeable one. Definately a bit more power/torque. Turkey call is in full effect....

only question is right in the area where if I shift I get the turkey call I can hear a loud "WOOOOOOOOSSSSHHHH" (likely air being drawn in for turbo)

I have a 94RX7 (one of the louder turbos ever) and it makes a similar but more quiet noise.... however we have the stock airbox on it which could muffle the sound

This being my first intake adjustment on either car is it normal for intakes like the Injen CAI to have such a loud noise when drawing large amounts of air?

Just wanting to know if this is normal before I go back in and fiddle around.

The only problem areas I had with the instal which I have no idea if they are problems are.... 1) where the vibraground is it doesnt screw down to the point where both pipe pieces are 110% level but I'm not sure it was meant to be perfectly level or if it was supposed to elevate slightly. 2) when putting on the air filter, the filter is right next to a part of the chasis and in my eyes could've been moved over a bit so its not touching anything.

So long story short..... loud woosh.... is it normal? If not any ideas?

Yeh the whoosh is pretty loud, but I like it :)

BTW, read my 2 ticket thread.. I think my "turkey noise" may have made cops think I did a burnout LOL!

Edit* Oh... say you're driving in 2nd gear.. and u punch it up to about 4.5k rpms and obruptly let off the gas, then you will hear the turkey call... if you let up lightly.. you will hear the whoosh.. I assume that's the whoosh you are talking about, and that's when I notice the whoosh the most

oh and to clear it up a bit more..... i know it should make some wooshing but is it a noticeably louder woosh in comparison to other intakes you've heard.

Reason I ask is wondering if the connection on the filter isnt the best and pulling in air from around it (installing the filter isn't exactly the easiest thing when you're 6-2 and you're trying not to take off the bumper)

Yeh I hear ya.. I'm 6'4".. I just lifted the car with a jack. But I'm assuming the whoosh is more noticeable because of the location of the filter.. maybe it like echos down there or something lol

Edit* Keep your old filter and tubing handy... because I'd probably put my old one back in before taking it to the dealership. Reason being.. if they can prove that the intake was the cause of the problem with your car, then it voids the warrentee. If it isn't the cause, they will more than likely take note of your mod.. and if it ever was the cause of a problem.. i think your warrentee would be void even if you put the old filter back in (but only if they notice) (sup run on sentence)

yeah basicly when you're turbo is doing its thing is when you're gonna get the mass amount of air flow which is why i thought it was normal..... i get the woosh around 2800-4000rpm when i get to 4500 it stops with the wooshing. That's also the basic life of the turbo if I'm not mistaken.

If I wait past 4500rpm the wooshing stops and if I shift after right around 4500 or 5000rpm + I don't get the turkey call

which makes sense..... turbo is done with wooshing has stopped and turkey call doesnt happen.

It's like relearning to ride a bike hehe.... I'm so used to the rx7 and rotary engines and the way they operate that I second guess my thoughts on my MSP.

I'll try and get some audio clips of my rx7's turbos...... loud as a motherfucker

reply to warranty:

yeah i figured as much..... installing the stock intake isnt a big deal im guessing.

Well I don't pay attention to the exact RPM's cuz i seldomly look.. but I'm just making an example. GL with ur intake and future mods :) I'd be adding new stuff to my car, but I have tickets to worry about first (argh)

What do you recommend as a second upgrade? Do they make aluminum piping for the MSP coming from the radiator?

the intake is nice isn't it? :D as for a second upgrade, i'd say free up the other side of the engine now...the exhaust. people have seen pretty good gains with a dp and catback. prolly should be your next target for basic upgrades. not sure about your other question.

Where are you at in Saint Louis, Pkay? Just curious--I live in the south county area near 270 and Tesson. I dont have an MSP yet, but as soon as I sell the Z then Im headin straight to the dealer. What color is your speed? Oh, and isn't it sweet---I have never seen an MSP on the road. Itll be nice to have an exclusive car thats not a neon with a fart can:p

well I'm not big on loud obnoxious catbacks..... the rx7 has a racingbeat dual catback that is nice and smooth..... if I can find a similar one for the MSP i'd jump on it.

Has anyone had experience with upgrading around the stock catback?

I'll have pics up of mine soon

Mines black with tinted windows (i think im the only black one with tinted windows in St Louis... might be the only black on in st louis period)

I live in O'fallon... i go to school in Earth City and have numerous friends off of 270 and the rock road.... you should see me around sometime hehehe

do you post on st louis street racing?

i'm not a fan of loud annoying catbacks either. just choose a quieter muffler and if it's still loud, put the silencer in or get a resonator. the turbo should already quiet things down anyways. i've heard some people talking about wanting to keep the stock axleback, not sure what they've done so far though. in my mind, you're just hurting performance. but to each his own :)
