Installation Tips

Hey everyone, in a couple of weeks I will be installing my parts, but would like some tips from you that have installed NA parts on your P5s. My P5 is all stock right now and would like some questions answered.

I am gonna be installing my RB catback, K&NCAI, and Wagner header. Would it be possible to install all these on the car in one day without doing any harm whatsoever?

Also when installing these 3 parts should I disconnect the negative terminal of the battery at all times?

When done installing these parts how would I reset the P5 ecu and how many minutes do I leave the car on so that my car will get used to the parts?

Any other helpful tips would be appreciated. Thanks In advance everyone.

i'm sure you could do it in one day if you worked at it. of course this is coming from a person who can turn an intake install into a 5 hour job...

To answer your other questions:

1.) it wouldn't hurt to keep the battery disconnected. plus that way you won't have any chance of messing the sensors up when you unplug them.

2.) to reset the ecu, just disconnect the battery and pump brakes a few times (to discharge all the capacitors).

good luck with the install! don't rush yourself, though, just make sure it's done right.

Just be gentle with the bolts when doing the header. Use a lot of wd-40 and rock the bolts till they come out loose with little force. And also be very gentle with the O2 sensor.

^^what he said, for sure. The bolts connecting the stock ehxaust manifold to the first cat are very difficult to remove without breaking sometimes.
I'd soak the bolts (including the ones on your exhaust) overnight with PB Blaster or something similar.
Also be careful with the MAF when you install your intake, they're pretty sensitive--and make sure it's pointed in the correct direction when you connect everything up.

Have fun...wagner header is gonna kill ya. Have a machine shop ready to remove broken studs and replace them on that first cat. Soak all the bolts for a week, going out and spraying them daily with penetrating oil....

PB Blaster = WD 40 (penetrating oil)

hahah ok thanks

I thought I was the only one that had never heard of this stuff when someone mentioned it to me about four months ago. I used it for my own header install, too. I like it better than WD40, but I keep both around now.

Good luck with the header. If you want more power released, get an MP3 ECU :)

And be sure the engine is cold when you do the header. Hot bolts snap on our cars.

Also, the way I was able to reset my ECU was turning the key on to accessory, then disconnecting the - terminal, pump brakes, key off.

Since you are putting on the OBX header, you know you will have to do a trick to the 2nd O2 sensor to prevent the CEL? There is a resistor capacitor soldering cutting wires method. The other, which is what I did, is go to Auto Zone, get 2 spark plug non-foulers in the "HELP!" section. Part number is 42002. Drill one out with a 1/2 drill bit, or use a Dremel. Stick the one drilled out non fouler onto the o2, then them onto the non drilled out one. That will trick the O2 to think all is well. I did not last long without a CEL without it, and had to do the above to reset the ECU.

oh, ok. thought he was doing an OBX. Never mind. I guess the only thing useful was resetting the ECU. Oh well.(sad2)

Thanks everyone for your input. Well my wagner header looks fine and looks of real nice quality. The only thing is there is a thin metal piece in the EGR tube. Is it ok if I use a drill to remove it? If so what drill do you recommend? Should I use a dremel?

Thanks everyone for your input.

I think a pic is needed to ok doing anything. There should NOT be any metal pieces at all. Can you post up a pic?

An extra 10 HP (thumb)

No, the MP3 had +10hp at the crank. Also a different exhaust and intake mani.
You'll be lucky to get 3-4 whp out of it.

That said, I've got one and if you can find one for $100.00 or less, it is a worthwhile mod at that price.
Anyway, I gotta get to the dyno with this Thunder Header I've got, so we'll see how I match up to those with similar mods but no MP3 ECU.
