yea you can buy an SRI. I believe perrin, k&n, and apex all make them. Maybe more... If you want though you can just buy some piping (even just plastic or silicone if you want) and then stick a filter on the end. Custom and cheap. Or you can put a cone filter on the end of your stock intake. I did that for a while and was very happy. Search around on the best place to get those short-rams, i can't really say.

great places for protege's, and in our little community:
*************.com
ProtegeGarage.com
Corksport.com
SLSperformance.com

to name a few...

don't be intimidated. All it is is piping and a filter. get a coupler to secure the pipe to the turbo with some tight clamps, and clamp the filter on the other end. Really not that big a deal... :)

what i think would be really cool is to fabricate some sort of shield for the filter on my short ram, and duct air from somewhere. Benefits of a CAI, and a short ram!!

I'll chime in with my experience on this. Pirana and I had a little test on which setup would be more beneficial. When we would run the cars, the car with the cold air extension would pull ahead.

The stock ECU retards timing if the intake sensor reads higher intake temperature and thus reducing power output to safeguard against knock.

The sensor is best mounted in a location where it can read the actual air temperature that is going directly into the intake tract.
In theory, it should be mounted near the throttle body, but its not feasible due to boost and it will pop off. If you get a second filter like the AEM dryflow you can poke a hole at the top of the plastic and mount the sensor there.

hmmm with what you said im definitely interested in moving it into the intake rather then hanging. i relocated my maf so all i have is filter then pipe.. i wonder if i drilled a hole behind the filter on the pipe and used the grommet on the stock airbox..

thing is.. i don't want to drill the hole and it runs worse lol

Very interesting. Real world testing! Me likey!

I am not MSP, but, i am running an Injen CAI I am wanting to convert to SRI, but, was wondering the same issue with the temp sensor. May just leave the CAI extention on till the rains pickup then, convert to SRI

i just cut a hole in the back of the filter head and crammed it in there...no issues

no, i have a k&n filter and its all rubber besides the fins...so i cut a hole in the back lip and stuck it in there...

ok so rubber or metal, same s***.. and in a location like so?
