Inexpensive helmet suggestions?

Go on EBAY, and look up helmets, any type of motorcycle helmet is good. I bought and older Lazer Snell 96 helmet brand new for less than 100 dollars.

Technically, Snell90 SA or M or newer is OK. 90 goes away as soon as the Snell2005 standard appears in a year or two, so I'd recommend getting a Snell2000 rated helmet. Again SA or M rating is OK.

I got mine for $130 at a local motorcycle dealer. If you buy online you might want to find it locally first to check for proper fit.

If you don't know exactly what you want yet, try out both open and full face helmets. I've tried a few friend's full face helmets anc can't stand them for autocross. For open track I'll be using full face though.

I got my open face HJC at a motorcycle shop for $75.

I started with a goal of $200, but I figured to protect my noggin', I'd spring for a upper level helmet. I got a Bieffe Predator for just under $400.

Think of it as an investment. Also don't buy one that's too old or else you'll just have to replace it sooner.

Get an M2000 unless you have a rollcage, then get an SA2000.
Don't buy it from ebay, go to a local shop and try some on to make sure it fits comfortably and safely.

This is a perfect example of why to avoid ebay, especially for something as important to your safety as a helmet!

There is no Snell 96 rating! The standards are only updated every five years. Scary stuff.

Hey, my bad...I was recalling it off the top of my head. My helmet is only a couple of years old, but it's in brand new condition.

Go the the 2000 ones or newer, I think. Check out Bell helmets online...that's where I got my helmet. Their closeouts are usually a damn good deal.

If you can wait until October, the Snell 2005 helmets will come out then. This is only important if you are using it in competition. SCCA will disqualify Snell 90 helments for next year. Buy the best helmet you can afford that is Snell rated.

Point - how much is your brain worth?

Buy the best you can afford. Don't try to skimp on a helmet - it will be with you for a long time, you will probably spend hours on end with it on, and it is protecting a very important part of your person. Find a shop locally, try some on for fit/comfort, find one you like (M vs. SA, Open vs. closed are all personal preference/priority things) and then price shop for it. That's the only way you should be saving on headgear IMO.

Avoid e-bay unless its a reputable seller who can certify the item is new. Used helmets are only a good idea when you know who's head was in there before yours and can be sure that head is still working and hasn't been scrambled making friendly with lightposts or something...

I have a Simpson LX-N. Very nice light helmet for autocross. BTW "any old motorcycle helmet" will not work. I'd suggest buying a copy of the rule book so you don't thorw your money away.

totally agree...your life is worth more than your car or your money...the best helmet is what you want...when you have it take care of it...don't toss it around and throw it on the ground b/c that reduces the effectiveness of a helmet

What sm76 said. It's cheap, I prefer open face in the 100 degree valley heat, and they even come in lots of colors, if you're lucky one will nearly match your ride. About $75-80 and Snell rated.

i really dont see why you are all worried so much about protecting ur head when we all drive hardtops, do you really think there is much possiblity ur going to roll ur car on an auto-x course? i mean yeah buy a quality helmet but there is NO reason to go spend $400 on a helmet for autocross, thats just ludacris. BTW i have a MSR World Tour i bought a year ago for my atv thats snell 95 rated and i used it yesterday for auto-x and liked it, cept i took the visor off of it cuz i kept hitting it on stuff.

I got an open face THH helmet for 79.00 shipped. For autocross events I think the "you can't put a price on life" convention is kind silly. My helmet is carbon kevlar weave so it's pretty damn strong. For my purposes this is more than adequate. It has a Snell 2000 rating so it will be good for about ten years since SCCA rules dictate that any helmet used must have one of the two most recent snell ratings so this year it's SN00 and SN95. Maybe for a Motorcycle helmet where the odds of hitting your head are way higher, yes paying a lot for a helmet is a good idea, but for autocross some rated helmet will do fine. I mean these cars are not SUV's so the likelyhood of a roll over is about nill
