I never noticed the ring either. I know they mention that each person has a totem, and now that you say it, using his wifes totem would violate his rule, meaning that it wasn't truly his method for checking.
why was the thread merged?
In terms of the last dream being shortest, that was the limbo dream. That was an indefinite time frame, which just happened to be short for Leo, not for the other CEO (forget his name), which they allude to right at the beginning. The "kick" that they kept showing once they got into the third layer was so scattered, it was hard to really grasp how much time each "action" took in each level. The van falling was barely shown for any length of time, and was slowed down, so it's hard to say. The elevator kick wasn't as bad, because he was able to complete it without distraction, but without gravity.
My next problem was the concept of being "kicked" out of Limbo. How is it that the girl and the heir were able to leave limbo by jumping off a building? That seems rather easy to do, doesn't it? Why all the fuss about being "trapped" in limbo forever if all you need is to jump off a building??
I will agree that the movie was great to watch- the cinematics were outstanding (the weightless fight in the hotel was outstanding), and the plot assumed a level of intelligence by the viewer that is so rare in Hollywood these days!
But there were a few glaring problems with the concepts that really made it hard for me to suspend my belief (I know, I know, everyone hates "that guy", but I guess that's who I am)...
First of all, the concept of the time difference between levels only makes sense in the first level. They illustrated rather well that your brain imagines events faster while you sleep than they can occur in real time- For example, you can remember having what felt like an hour long conversation with someone even if you were asleep for only 5 minutes.
This is because when you dream, you only dream about the concepts, not the details. The details aren't important- such as how long it takes to walk across the street. The only thing that matters is that you walked. So you think about walking, and then suddenly you're on the other side. If anything happened along the way, your brain took a moment to fire that thought off as well, but clearly the events will transpire at the rate of your thoughts instead of in real-time.
Now, what happens if you have a "dream within a dream"? If such a thing were in fact possible, the next layer WOULD NOT MOVE ANY FASTER than the previous layer, because you are ALREADY in the state in which things move as fast as your thoughts! All three layers should have moved at the same pace, all of which being faster than reality.
If anything, it should have gone SLOWER, because your brain is now processing the next layer, while still also thinking a little bit in the previous one (as evidenced by the projections of his subconscious still being around to fight in the previous level- if all his brainpower went into the next level, and he essentially puts the current level "on hold", there should not have been anyone fighting against the Van driver or attacking in the hotel!
My next problem was the concept of being "kicked" out of Limbo. How is it that the girl and the heir were able to leave limbo by jumping off a building? That seems rather easy to do, doesn't it? Why all the fuss about being "trapped" in limbo forever if all you need is to jump off a building??
Then there's the gravity shift in the hotel thing. In your dream, when you feel gravity changing, falling, etc, you feel it in your dream, just like you hear music, sense cold/hot, etc and it appears and effects what you dream about.
However, the "whole dream world" doesn't shift to one side or the other. You just feel like you fell. The water in the guy's glass shouldn't have shifted- he should have fallen over inexplicably, while the room stayed the same way.
The world around you didn't shift- you did. So, when they were all "floating" in the hotel, the rest of the hotel (elevator, etc) should have been regular gravity, however all the subjects would just randomly be falling for no apparent reason.
Besides, IF they had lost gravity in that dream world, why was there gravity in the next layer? And WHY DIDN'T LOSING GRAVITY (which was caused by their sense of falling) wake up the one guy who wasn't in the next layer?
For whatever reason, I'm glad it didn't because it would have avoided the greatest sequence in the movie (weightless fight scene was astounding!).
Don't get me wrong, still a great movie, but sometimes you see something in a movie that makes you go "huh? that's doesn't really work like THAT!" and it kind of ruins it. *sigh*
Leo and the girl went into Limbo through the "sleeping(?)" Machine. The heir dude died, but that had one chance to revive him with those jolts; which had to be timed right with him falling/jolted.
This makes sense to me... except it wouldnt make a good movie haha. Hollywood can do whatever the hell they want and to most it makes relative sense
Leo made it out once with his sanity. I believe he could do it again
