Hi everyone, I am a Mazda enthusiast having owned a 3 and a Miata in the past and currently own a 2010 Miata. I am in the market for CX-9. I cannot find a a reasonable deal for a 2010+ CX-9. I really want the AKE. There are some really nice deals out on 2014s. I wanted some opinions on this topic from the current owners ? Some questions in my mind are :

Is the MPG really below par ? Was the 2011 MPG bump noticeable ?
Whats the news of a 2015 MY ? Any changes expected ? When are they coming out ?
I know this shape is been out since 2007, and is due for a redesign. Should that discourage me from the CX-9.
What kind of deals are the the new owners getting on the 2014s

FYI: I typically buy used to save on initial depreciation costs. I am pretty good with the wrench and do the research to save money in maintenance and repairs. Other cars in the mix are 2014 Highlander and a used 2010+ MDX.
Thanks all.

I purchased a 1 year old 2013 CX9 Touring AWD. payed 26999 for it, with CPO warranty and all that. At the time a new Cx9 Touring AWD with tech package was running around 33k, and without was around 31. This was last January, so I'm not sure what the current situation on prices is.

I'm expecting some big changes for 2015, most likely will have a stock engine that's a turbo 2.5, followed later by a big V6 and or a diesel (my guess anyway) They need the turbo 4 to gain on mileage, which is not impressive in these, but I gather that all the CUV's have this issue. I'm regularly getting 18-19mpg on most of my mixed city trips, with 21-22 on my long distance one. Mind you I have a lead foot and typically drive 5-9 over the speed limit. Almost every other CUV I looked at got simlar numbers, unless you went with a hybrid which I didn't want to do.

So far I've had no issues, other than a frozen tailgate giving me a concussion 2 days after I bought it (it had snowed and was -25 that morning lol. I've not seen a lot of issues with others, except for the big one which is the transfer case/transmission problem. This is happening in the AWD models, and was affecting things so much that Mazda recently upped the warranty the transmission and transfer case. It's a significant issue and cost to replace is around 3k I've heard. This also is not an uncommon problem in CUV's and AWD minivans, where a car chassis is being used to support way more weight and power than they were designed for again IMO, it just happens to be the most significant issue I see with these.

I do like mine a lot, the driving is quite phenomenal, and it is a very fun car. It fits everything I have and then some, and got me through one of the snowiest and coldest winters we've had here in MN with nary a problem (except for my little oopsie) I'd recomend them with the caveat about knowing the transfer case issue.
My only minor complaint is that hte head unit is a little goofy sometimes, especially playback on a USB and Ipod is not as smooth as I'd like, namely the in ability to start on the last song playing and with my USB anyways the not so random shuffle function :( again pretty minor given that this is by far one of the most advanced cars I've ever had.

i paid 30250 otd for a new 2014 touring. that includes 9% sales tax. could've gotten a bit cheaper (1 dealership's first otd quote was for 29800) but this place had the color combo i wanted.

it looks like mazda is offering at least 4500 off in rebates for the cx9 right now. keep that in mind when you're looking for a price...i wasn't aware until i looked over the paperwork the dealership drafted...something like 1000 for being a current mazda owner, and 3500 off a cx9...off the top-of-my-head. so getting at least 4500 below invoice should be easily gotten.

i heard the new cx9 would be a 2016 but someone else probably knows better. i needed a 6-7 seater right now so i had to take the hit. not regretting anything at the moment...

thought i'd purchase the new highlander but the older cx9 had more usable interior room, was significantly more comfortable, and had better driving dynamics...although the manumatic tranny on the highlander shifted better than on the cx9.

Thanks jLanger for the helpful post. In my case, If I am to buy new, I will opt for FWD as we dont see snow in CA, might as well enjoy the slightly better mpg too.

That is a pretty good price indeed. I was able to see a 2014 Grand touring non-tech for $28,035 with all the rebates - tax - loyalty discount at CJ Wilson in Illinois. I took it to Galpin Mazda in Van Nuys and they said they will match it. I think thats a great price. I have never bought a brand new car before as I try to avoid the initial depreciation hit. However, almost 9k off the MSRP makes me think twice. The only negatives for the CX-9 so far are:

Below par MPG
9 year old engine/paltform
rather high wind/road noise on the freeway
the new 3,5 aand CX-5 are so much better I cannot imagine what Mazda will do with the CX-9. Best I have read suggests a 2016 MY car released in late 2015.

Mazda is known for small changes every year. e.g. 2014 got the new wheels, rear cross traffic alert and a few standard features across the board. There is not info on the 2015s let alone being on the lot. Am I OK to assume that the deals on 2014s will only get better once the 2015 are on the lot ?

Apologies to those who think I am over analyzing. In my defense, I am a car guy and this will be the largest purchase of my life so far.

Also, one more thing. We preferred the black leather interior over the sand since it will be a kid-mobile. But I was disappointed that the black interior comes with suede inserts and door cards. How easy / hard is it to clean or keep clean ?

Thanks

Hey guys, just got a 2014 CX-9 GT w/Tech last month. I didn't get the extended warranty. With the transfer case/transmission problem would you recommend getting the extended warranty? When does it usually go? How many miles?

My lowest quote was from Temecula Mazda (although I didn't purchase from them)...you may want to give them a try if you haven't already.

Yes, I'm sad to see the suede inserts as well...looks nice (red stitching!) but I too am worried about their longetivity...although the wife mentioned that normal cloth panels in another car we own have fared well so I shouldn't be so worried about the suede.

I also went with FWD after reading all the transfer case horror stories...

I haven't had a chance to push the car hard yet (only 2nd tank of gas so far) but in the end it is one darn heavy vehicle and the weight you feel while cornering supersedes wheels being driven at the wrong axle/torque steer/wheel-spin on hard acceleration. You can't take off the traction control anyways...
...but then again it drives better than anything else in its respective class (afaik) so...

feel free to update the thread if you pull the trigger on the cx9. i'd like to know what kind of price you get! :)

That's what I've felt too, I had the added advantage of a recent snowstorm to play in nice snowy parking lots adn see the traction control/awd in action. Honestly the Traverse did the best in snow, worst in dry land for handling. The Explorer seemed faster, fit me a bit better in head room, but didn't handle as well, though I hated the tech and the Sync, took me 10 minutes just to get things going (and I feel pretty tech savy) The Mazda handled the best in dry, was ok in snow, she really likes to kick the back end out for some reason. and over all felt the most user friendly. I knew about the transfer case issues and warrantied up with the CPO, I'll see where I'm at around 100k with getting something new or if Mazda finally recalls the unit. I too needed something fairly quickly and went with what I could find, a black touring, though I did test drive a 2014 tech touring in the color I wanted, it was too much $$ for what I had at the time.

Right now is probably one of the better times to get a cx9 if you're ok wtih the old style, as they'll be clearing them out pretty soon for the 2015 and new redesign. I recall back in 03 I'd purchased my p5 the winter before, my mom lucky soul, needed a car in the fall, and wanted one like mine. A dealer found one of the last 2 in the state, loaded wtih every option available, she paid the same price for that as I had for mine, which had no options. At the time the new 3 was just coming out and proteges were being sold for steals.

I can wait a bit, with the soon to be born baby, our family head count will be 5, but we have 2 sedans and a Miata. We can wait for the deals to get better.

I have been looking for a used 2011 plus but they are Priced very close to the new one . Does anyone have any news on the 2015s ?

Nice car ... If u don't mind sharing, what kind of a deal did you get. Any insight into negotiating a better deal ?

Check out car gurus.com... Great site with awesome pricing info! I have a 2010 GT and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!
It has a black leather interior and is a breeze to clean. I recommend to Lexol product line!

I travel extensively for my job and this thing eats up freeway miles with absolute comfort!!!

Even with AWD; I avg 21 - 24 mpg on the highway depending on conditions... Just have to learn best throttle control for the CX9.

Does anyone have any information on the 2015 Model year cx-9 ? any changes expected ? Also, what is a good resource to find about up-coming rebates ? Google isn't helping much ?

Go for it if you like the vehicle, if you like it vs its competitors, if you like the price.

According to the C&D new car issue this month, no changes. Just going to keep pushing that 9 year old design....

I wouldnt say that. The 2013 refresh distances itself from the earlier years visually quite a bit.

How so?

Not underneath; same engine, same tranny and same 17mpg EPA combined as 2007 MY. And from what I read, the 2013 Navi is not much of an improvement. Plus--the interior is almost exactly the same as my '12, except they did away with the 2-tone leather, which I personally think is nicer, and changed the red IP backlighting to white, with a new font. Also did away with the LED tail lights.

Yes--the smiling snout is gone, but that's about it.

Agreed. Different from the 07 to 09. From the 10 to the 12.

Facelift number 2 did provide several tech upgrades.

As far as when an all new CX-9 is coming, it reminds me a lot of the Tacoma world. LOL
Same question year after year haha.
But hey , now we finally expect the 2016 Taco to change, finally spy shots!

There is no info here though, and going by all the slated facelifts (6 and CX-5 with spyshots included) and debuts(2 and Miata) and new models not yet confirmed, expect the all new model in year 2016(MY 2017) along with the facelift of the 3.
All that takes a lot of time and money from a company.

Thanks all for the feedback ... I agree that Mazda has done very little to the CX-9 to keep up with the times ... I think they should have worked on the engine at the least. Direct injection would have helped the mpg. Also, interior changes are extremely. Looks like the mid cycle upgrade team got no budget to work with.

Anyhow, since I am in no great hurry, I will keep an eye out on a good used one that as well as incentives on new ones.
