import vs. corvette

okay, so i was reading C&D and one of the writers put in that even if you drop $50k into a civic, it still wouldn't be able to outrun a corvette. now, my question is, if the task was to beat a corvette and had $50k and a civic already on hand, what would you do to it ? i know that there are many examples that can prove this statement wrong (i.e. cheezefrog's stock looking civic hatch that runs 10s), but i want to know why the cost would be $50k. now go ! (direct)

Shows you how far up chevy's a$$ car and driver is!!!!!

They probably were including the purchase price of the civic in that 50k since the corvette costs 50k. That would make the price equal. So figure 30k for mods, still a lot.

Also, is the requirement just be faster or does it have to match handling performance and such as well. That could boost the price.

the only diff is.. that z06 will run forever.. that civic wont.. they arent made to handle that kind of power period.. and if your going with a hybrid frankenstein honda motor.. id thing twice. ive see so many of those blow up its not even funny.

does this include doing the work yourself (assuming you could) becasue labor would eat a ton of that $30K

i think you could easily take that z06 down...whether it wouuld run forever is another story, but you could still do it. hell i watched a video of a ******* scooter beating a ws6.

and you could buy a civic shell for like 500 bucks since youre going to gut it and put all new s*** in it anyhow, so it really wouldnt eat up much of 50k.

i highly disagree. I'm from the honda camp and I know plenty of civics/integras/rsx/del sols that would eat a corvette alive. Mine hit around mid 13s and the fuel/timing maps were all screwed up. Unfortunetly the car was wrecked but it would have been able to outperform stock corvettes if things came together. Also something to think about, there are some hatches with b18s or b20s that are in the 13s all motor.

No doubt you could get a shell, but I don't think that was the writers point. Perhaps he would have said the civic could be made faster if he was working with 49,500 dollar budget from the shell. Anyhow, I've never considered what it would require to make a civic that fast so I'll leave it to the pro's to debate that.

A civic could easily outhandle a vette too...As sad as it is to say it, even with my Teins coilovers, I still think my Civic handled better than my Mazdaspeed.

Let me just say; If I had $50,000 to spend on an American Car, the new 2005 Vette would not be a bad choice. Give me a roadster, please! Oh yes; and with a 6 speed. I'm not a Chevy guy, and never have been. But; I finally like the Corvette after a lot of years. I guess; it's a part of the American Dream thing.

hmm...okay. so yeah, i guess when i say outrun, i mean generally outperform. labor, if you're a true enthusiast, you'll do it yourself

The fact that getting a civic well into the 10s is pretty much proven again and again. Also with the civic being the king of the imports as far as aftermarket parts goes it would really not require much in the way of "custom" parts. It would probably not be a streetable as the Vette but would still probably be pretty reliable. All that said I llove the civics and the zo6 is a sweet ride however If I had the 50k to throw down it would certainly not be spent either way. Audi s4 is one on my list.

I wouldn't want a Civic worth 50g's either, but for the sake of the argument, it could be done rather easily. It's probably possible to outperform the 'Vette in every test givenwith a budget like that.

id rather ahve the z06 than a bad ass civic.. maybe thats just me tho. -=\
maybe its the fact everyone loves that car.. and only a select few would love the civic. -=\

What if you bought a used late model vette for a reasonable price and put in 30k worth of mods? I got one name for you...John Lingenfelter...I'd take that option over a cracked out civic anyday.

Agreed!! My wife rented a convertible corvette for my b'day last year. It was a 2002 model w/ 350 horses.....I've never experienced anything like it!!! I've always liked corvettes but now I know I will own one.....one day. Definitely go w/ a lingenfelter package on my 2006 convertible.....(stock 400 horses plus s/c)....one day, oh yes, one day!

he said outrun, not out accelerate
the civic would probably top out at 140mph without some gear changes and some radical body changes to make it more aerodynamic
the vet would probably cruse at 180 given enough time for it to get there, and if its not limited, but being that its an american car it probably is

i know when i worked at the chevy dealership selling cars the top speed was all limited. that is what we were told time and again by the techs, but i never personally tested it. i think 105 was what it was set at im pretty sure. reason i know/asked was because people would always come in and ask what the top speed was on the monte SS...i would say same as the cavalier.

haha okay..thanks guys.

oh yeah, it kinda bothers me how american car companies are starting to entry D1 drifting. plus they've got drivers that have racing history ! (i.e. rhys millen in the pontiac GTO drift car)...
