PLEEEAAAAAAASSSSSSSEEEEEEE HEEEELLLLP!!!! I'm trying to install my short shifter and I CAN NOT GET THIS STUPID RETAINING RING OFF!!!!! I have the retaining ring pliers and I still can't get it off. It's been over an hour now and I'm so angry that I'm shaking. I have no clue if I'm even doing what I'm supposed to because it simply can't be THIS hard. Here is a pic of what I'm trying to do:

I just put the pliers into the empty slot in the black ring and squeeze...then I'm trying to pry it out but it just won't come out. When I try to pry it it's taking the whole thing, pulling the shifter and everything. Here are my pliers...maybe I got the wrong kind:

My car is on ramps as we speak in the backyard...I really need help. Sorry bout the size of the pics but I did all this really quickly.

Thanks,
JT

use that retaining clip tool and a small screw driver (flathead of course) use the flathead to get under the clip as you squeeze the ring.

No. It should be squeezing the ring inward. You want to squeeze the ring a bit to get it off the lip it's in. Then use the other hand to get a small flathead under the rind and slide around the ring. ;) This is what I did when I installed mine.

Those are not retaining ring pliers dummy. at least not the ones you are supposed to use. Get some with little pins as the plier ends and clamp the ring using those little holes. do it this way it is much faster and easier and you won't scar the ball joint

why are you bashing on the guy. geez! The way you had that angled it looked like the right tool.

Well, go get the right tool... Be patient. You'll get it.

yeah, you need to squeeze the ring, not expand it.

a regular pair of needle nose pliers works, and it helps if you can get someone else with some small screwdriver to helpt you pry it out as well.

patience my friend. you will be happy when it's over.

ahhh...the wrong tool....nice.....

Thanks for the help or I would have been here all night.

Just wait till you try to get it back in...Its a B8tch...But just take your time..and Make sure you grease up the new ball joint!!

Otherwise..It might mess w/ your shifting!!

I wasn't bashing the guy. What is the world coming to when people over the age of 5 take offense to the word "dummy" c'mon. And yes the correct tool is the one pictured above

i found putting it back in to be a snap. pun intended.

make sure you get all the pieces back in the order you took them out. and dont damage the dust boot.

i had no problem removing or putting it back in.

Also about the dummy comment. Obviously he was messin around. The word "dummy" gave that away.

make sure u remember how everything came apart. I forgot and it had me puzzled for a few minutes

It's all cool. Luckily I was home and so I went over with the right pliers and helped JT out. izall good:D

GREAT cbcbd gald you could help out JT.....so all it good...

and for everyone elses information....IF JT went into a parts store and ask for SNAP RING PLIERS, and didn't specify which TYPE of snap ring plier he needed...and that is what they gave them...the salesmen was not WRONG...as those ARE snap ring pliers...just not the kind that JT needed for the job...those are EXTERNAL snapring pliers which are made for rings which do NOT have the little holes in the ends...but insted flat or pointed ends to the ring..... :{D I have some of those too, for removing the distributor drive gear off of the end of the crankshaft of an air cooled VW engine.
