Im starting to regret my cx7... :(

I agree it sound like you have a problem. We just went over 2100miles and have not seen anything less than 19mpg. The last couple of fillups have been in the 21-22mpg. This is mostly highway. As far as mazda, i should think they should help you out. Although when I called them this time last week to complain about the accident at my dealer they said they would get back to me in a couple of days. A week and still nothing.

You guys complaining about gas mileage and driving experience really need to give the truck a chance to break in. You guys are talking about wanting excellent MPG with like 500-1000 miles on ur car. U need to break it in first - my car still has a little burn smell today and i have 3k miles on it.

Just give it a chance, expecting PERFECT numbers right outta the box is unfair.

i have over 7500 miles on mine and I still get the same bad numbers.

well that sucks

a common trend im finding everywhere on the net with the Mazda is that everyone seems to be LOOKING FOR AND WAITING FOR something to go wrong, break, not work etc etc etc like the car was flawed from production

when ur driving a car daily and all you focus on is certain things, those things will become glaring you in the face by the end of the day. You guys need to relax and enjoy the suv for what it is and what it does, and it does certain things EXTREMELY well

For xavier tho, thats a different situations his car sounds mangled something is seriously wrong, for the rest of us mannn just relax with it

Once you have a perception of the suv in your head its not going to go away. When i buy all my Honda's i just perceive them to be close to perfect just cuz they were a Honda, and things that I would jump all over (lets say if it were an American car) i tend to brush off just because it was a Honda and i never expected it to have a problem

All im saying is, the 7 isnt perfect, but its damn close at accomplishing its mission. MOST people are getting above 17/18mpg and highway goers in the 20+range. To me, what more could you ask for. For christ sakes my car edged out a BMW 5 Series off the line, im totally cool with that

No complaints here. The CX-7 puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it!!

i don't know how any of u are getting over 16mpg, that 19/24 is BS IMO. i have averaged about 14mpg last 2 fill ups. i have about 750 miles on CX so far. i don't also see where CXrabbit said it's 18.2g tank. i drive it down to super close to totally empty, and fill it, took 16.1 first time, and 16.4 second time....
only complaint i have about the vehicle right now is the mileage, especially since i thought i was doing good by selling my acura MDX which was getting an average of 14.4mpg. i do admit i have a kinda heavy foot and recently been making good use of the M mode trans. i do about 75% city driving in NJ. as far as the other problems, i have none of those.
- what do u mean by detonation. i do notice the hesitation sometimes around 60mph w/ 6th gear...

depending on how you drive your car in manual mode or the regular mode dictates your mpg. I rarely engage the turbo unless I need to so my gas mileage on a bad day is 16mpg. I have a heavy/lead foot from my previous sports coupe. I've had to learn to be light on the pedal and therefore my mpg changed for the better. It does have an 18.2 gallon tank, just because you got 16 means you had 2 more gallons left as a precaution (most cars do this). It's written in all the reviews that the tank is 18.2. My advice to you is stop using the manual mode because it seems you don't know what you're doing (no offense) or when you reach about 3-3.5 rpms in any gear, upshift into the next gear or just don't use the manual mode.

have them flash your ECU at the dealer. Be lighter on the pedal, don't accelerate so quickly. I accelerate to the point where the turbo doesn't engage (<2000rpm) unless I'm going to have a little fun.

s*** i'm always cruisin at 3000rpm... i can't help it, i don't have a lead foot, i have a mix (ughdance) of lead, concrete and steel... always have...but i know how to drive a car without beating it to death...

Very well said! Look for something wrong and you will find it. Focus on something specific and that is all you will see. Perception does become reality... just like some people continue to think that the AWD "kicks in" !

On the poor mileage, Xavier & CHRIS, you certainly seem to be getting atypically poor results... 14 vs 18 mpg is a HUGE difference, I hope you can find some concrete resolution from your dealers.

As for the tranny, I find that the auto mode works very well when being delicate on the gas pedal. I can't believe how quickly it will run through 1st, into 2nd, and then into 3rd & 4th on its own. It would be so much more work for me to try & shift it manually that fast. I also love the "hill logic" that gets a downshift into 4th from 6th, or 3rd from 5th when I tap the brakes going down a hill... why mess with perfection!

I STILL love driving the CX-7... and our other two cars are SUBARU GTs !!!!

As CXRabbit said, be sure to correctly calculate fuel economy. I know the OP responded that he did, but many people estimate it from the gauge and this can lead to very inaccurate results.

My site has a fuel economy survey that includes questions about driving style and conditions. So far people are reporting reasonable numbers for the CX-7:

Mazda CX-7 fuel economy

Might also have some reliability info on the car as early as late February/early March. Depends on how many owners participate.

P5w3kids, it might also be interesting to note what the mileage is on your fuel economy stats. It might also see if there is a correlation with break in mileage and fuel economy. What do you think?

well after i did the flash im my dealer i get better gas mileage and i have 15000 miles on it and im pretty happy with it, no problems at all!!!

I'll be going for my first oil change probably before x-mas and I'll be sure to ask for the latest flash -- still in the break-in period I'm only getting 14 mpg (mostly city/around town driving)... and that's calculating ACCURATELY, not guessing.

How did you approach, ask the dealer to do the reflash? no charge of course

Thanks

Some dealers (like Corey Fairbanks Mazda) will have no clue what you are talk ing about so be ready. My dealership claimed there was not 5-6th gear 60mph problem. They also said there was no driver's side door problem (yet they ordered new door parts). Any problems you have come ready with a list and have each one taken care of.

I wasn't trying to insult you btw I was merely pointing out that even when driving stick and you try to keep the rpms low for everyday driving. I wasn't saying you were beating it to death either, i just saying that keeping the car in lower rpms will help your mpg while the car breaks. After it breaks in you should get better mileage all around but obviously you'll get better mileage when you only engage the turbo when needed.

When I went in for my last service, I asked the dealer for a reflash. The guy said they're not supposed to do it on a whim, only when there's a related problem reported, so he rewrote the service order to say I was having hesitation problems (I wasn't).

I drive about 90-95% highway and I'm averaging 21.1 MPG over 8000 miles. I'm not gentle with the turbo when off the highway, either.

EDIT: I also haven't seen any mileage difference after the reflash.

just so im positive - the 1st oil change is at 3k or 5k? i went in over 3k they never said anything but i also forgot to ask

I though way before 3K. Your first should be pretty quick because of any debree of metals from the manufacturing process, etc from the engine. I could be wrong though...
