Should the ignition timing on a high-miles 2.0L engine be set different from the factory setting, or does the ECU do it anyway based on the emissions or other readings ?

My old '86 Corolla ran a lot better when I advanced the timing from the factory spec of 5* up to 13* when the car had 180,000 miles, and wonder if my P5 would do the same when it gets way up in miles. Has anybody here changed (advanced ?) the timing on their high-miles 2.0L engine ? Did you notice any difference such as running cooler, burning less oil, more power, etc ?
