Ignition key release button/switch mod

:
2008 Mazda5 GT
Do all Mazda5s have a release button to take out the key? I have never come across this in any other car and find it rather annoying, and quite frankly I dont get the purpose of it. Anyone care to clue me in why this is necessary? Has anyone mod to defeat this feature?

you mean, realease the key from the ignition? almost all cars have some sort of locking mechanism... in my 94 grand am, i had to push the key in AND push a button to get the key out of the ignition. talk about a pain...

I've only had moslty older Japanese cars (Honda, Toyota, Infiniti, Mazda -older Miata) and haven't had a new car in a while. The push in, I have experience but not a release button -Why? In your case, why both? Since you mention Grand Am, I wonder if this is an American thing from the Mazda-Ford connection. Or is this the new standard? May be I am just out of touch -I miss power anteanna!

I would imagine it should be easy to defeat the push button. Duck tape to hold the button down -FTW!

yep, very common. My Suzuki Sidekick (89) and my mother's 93 Honda civic both have the button on the ignition key. but the placement on them ( and the MZ5) is so good that as you turn the key back, your thumb will activate the button and you hardly notice that it's even there!! Now if they would fix the stupid reverse gear lock out on the MTX that would be great!

so you have a 2008 Mazda5, and you have a release button, too? my 2008 mazda5 i only have to push the key in, no extra button... hhmmm...

Hmmm. May be I'm not remembering correctly but I had a '97 Civic and my dad's '99 Esteem did not have a push to release key button. Or did they have it but it was so fluent that I don't realize/remember.?! They do have push to release, which I don’t mind as much.

No key-release button on my past cars or current selection except the 5. It has been a Ford thing for awhile. I also remember it being on various later-model Japanese cars. I think the Montero had one. Jeez, I've been in so many cars I can't remember which ones do & don't. It generally follows mfr preference. Just like Chrysler cars have always had headlight/parking light access on the dash left of the steering wheel and Honda has never had push-forward-on-the-stalk high beams.
Good ergonomics on these cars (for my very average-build, at least) but the ignition-key release can frustrate sometimes, especially if I haven't drive the car for a few days.

Just to be clear, my 2008 Mz5 does NOT have push-to-release (pushing the whole key into the ignition switch, like most cars), but instead has a button...

Really?

My '08 Mz5 does not have a button, but push-to-release. Mines a Touring, but I can't imagine why that would change this?

My '07 Touring (manual trans) has the push button key release. As someone stated above, it's placement is such that you can easily press it as you turn the car off and remove the key in one fluid hand motion. I don't even think about it... until now, obviously....

OK, new direction here: does anyone with a MANUAL trans NOT have this button?
Wondering if it is a req for man. trans cars and since 5MT is considerably less common with the redesign that maybe that is why it seems to be missing.

that could be it... the auto has an electronic interlock that will not let you turn the key past the "ACC" position unless the shifter is in "Park". maybe mazda put the extra button there as an additional fail-safe.

My manual 08 Corolla never had a button though, just push key in to go to Off then remove key. However I was only annoyed by the 5 for about a few days.
