Was running very well, daily driver around town, no long trips, no interstate. Around March, 2014, started a very intermittent and erratic behavior...
- normal driving, in town, running errands, etc...
- engine would suddenly race
- OD Indicator light would start flashing
- CEL came on
- car goes into limp-home mode
For a while, simply pulling over, turning off, then re-starting would fix. Sometime had to sit for a couple of minutes, sometimes it would only take as long as it took to do it...
Very intermittent occurences, with no discernable pattern
Would go weeks with no repeat, sometime as long as a couple of months
Began to occur more frequently....
Shop could find no codes, so told me to drive straight there next time, don't even shut it off....
They ultimately said MAF..... nope!
Have replaced MAF, TPS, removed and thoroughly cleaned egr, although aware that may or not mean it's now functioning properly
IAC and throttle body get cleaned 2,3 times a year, was fairly recent, last few months....
Now it won't stay running, to wit:
- will start and idle, albeit too high (1000) fairly smoothly
- soon as it reaches OT, engine begins to hunt wildly
- eventually it falls too low and cannot recover, dies
- smells like it's dumping a lot of unburned gas through, exhause smells very rich
Tried disconnecting EGR and plugging vac hose, no difference....
Has these codes, according to my scanner:
- P0115 - engine coolant temp sensor
- P0110 - intake air temp sensor
- P0120 - throttle position circuit malfunction
- P1195 - EGR boost sensor
- P1402 - EGR valve position sensor
- P0510 - closed throttle position switch malfunction
Don't mean to argue with the codes, and obviously some of these are also EGR related, but they don't "feel right", I guess..... especially in light of it not starting until it reaches OT....
I hope I have provided accurate enough information for someone with more knowledge and expertise than I to recognize the issue and provide some positive feedback. I am a fair shadetree mechanic at best... I can usually fix the issue... ONCE I know what it is! But diagnostics has NEVER been my strongest point, at least, not since you had to set points with your dwell meter!
If anyone can offer some advice or suggestions, I would be most grateful!
Thanks, everyone, and I hope you all have a great weekend!
