The kids pop in every DVD copy they play, it burns in just a few, and then the DVD goes back to the theater and the movie gets uploaded for sale or free use. There are closed groups on the internet that operate by invitation only. Once in, you have access to the database of downloaded movies.
Theaters can get movies weeks to months in advance. If they are one of the theaters doing an advance screening, they may get it 2-3, and up to 6 months in advance, depending on how soon before completion the people start advertising. The DVD-perfect copies either come from DVDs to theaters or illicit copies made during the screening process. So sometimes the movies one downloads can be "director's cuts" in effect, because it will be the copy burned to DVD before the editors get their hands on it. Often it is this copy that goes out years later as the director's cut.
I do not know anyone who does this, nor have I ever illegally downloaded movies or parts of movies from such an operation. Keep in mind that such activity is illegal both in U.S. courts and by international trade laws (if the file ever crosses borders). This is, in effect, the same as robbing a theater of a movie it has just spent millions developing.
And because these copies come out long BEFORE the movie is seen in theaters, the "I was just checking it out to see if I wanted to buy" argument used with MPEG downloads doesnt apply here. It is a blatant violation of copyright laws. This is the manner in which perfect bootleg copies of DVDs come out in other countries before the movie even gets out here.
