I think they've had it.

2008 TR Mazdaspeed 3
I just got into an argument with my Mom, the only one who has been letting me come to meets and been "ok" with my mods. Well... I drove her somewhere in the MS3 and it was the first time she had been in it with the new RMM... she hated it. Said that I need to consult with her when I do any little thing to the car even if it's with my money (all of it is). So we got into an argument and she doesn't even want me going to meets anymore (she said absolutely not to install day). She says that she doesn't know any of you and that I've given up all of my life and what I liked before for my car and mazdateam... which is totally untrue (I'm a singer, I sing in multiple choirs in my school and since it's summer I haven't been into singing at all... so she thinks that I've dropped it completely!) She doesn't want me being the "loser car kid..." She doesn't want me modding the car AT ALL anymore, basically stating that it's her and my dad's (which it is, I'm not contesting that)... I think I might be parting it out and getting rid of it. She said that I should take the Mazda6 and she should get herself a car. I just want MY OWN CAR. Something that they won't care what I do to... but unfortunatly I think they would care no matter what it is. Oh and by the way, I have a CEL.

You will get into arguments with your parents. Sometimes you just need to bite your tongue and take it. It is all about compromise. Give it a day or two and go back and talk it out.

I'm sure she has your best intrest in mind. Not that you are asking, but.....Take the MM out immediatly. I know it is a great mod and it really improves the car, unfortunately she (your mom) doesn't like it. If she is your only ally in the house when it comes to going to these meets then you should try to keep her happy with what you are doing to the car. Try this, take the mm out and let her go for a drive. Your idea about getting a car that you can "do whatever you want to" is great, but you will not be getting a MS3 on your own.

I'm sure she is worried about warentee issues amoung other things. Also she is probably worried that you are going to wrap yourself and that car around a telephone pole or tree. Like it or not, it is a pretty commonly held perception that people who mod their cars makes are more likely to wreck them in some sort of high speed scenario.

I'm sure there will be plenty of negitive feedback from what I have said, but when you calm down I think you will agree that I have it about right. Like Hector said, let things blow over, get the MM out and start over with your Mom. Or move out and get your own apt and car, just remember a$$, gas, or grass.....nobody rides for free.

If they will let you come to the intall day, you can get your CEL checked for free. Just come up and don't do any mods.

I think what she is most concerned about is warranty... she got in with my dad a couple of minutes ago and she's cooled off. She hasn't mentioned it at all... but really after I get my BPV on I'm done with power mods till next spring.
I don't think she is worried about me driving, just mostly the warranty and that I am spending a lot of money on the car... money that I do have, but isn't plentiful.

Its probably a little of everything. How much diferent does the BOV sound, she might not even notice. Better get the CEL read before you do anything more, and get that MM off the car. It will make a big diference to her I would imagine.

Well there is the option of buying your own car... I mean thats what I did when I graduated from high school.

EDIT; but truly, if they paid for the car you sorta have to do what they tell you to when it comes to modding it haha.

If you are thinking the oil is throwing the CEL, I doubt it. If you run syn oil 4000 is not too bad, unless you have my car in which case you ran out of oil 2000 mi ago.

If you are suggesting that you cold do the oil change at the install day, and maybe they would go for that....try it. Worst they can do is say no.

Penzoil platinum full syn... I don't have anything else that would be causing a CEL though! My mods have never caused any problems whatsoever.

could be a one time thing. Problem is if you take it to the dealer they can say what ever they want. If you get it checked by someone you know then you get the real story.

I suggest letting the heat die down and kill three birds with one stone.

Bring your parents up to the install day, they're more than welcome- we'll uninstall the motor mount and check/diagnose the CEL. They can relax... enjoy some burgers... etc.

Point is: your parents aren't wrong. Modding your brand new car to go faster (at any age) is pretty ******* stupid in the scheme of things. On top of costing you the little money that you have, you risk your warranty and safety. If it's not your decision to make, you should respect their wishes.

With the same token, bringing them along will show them that we're not exactly walking stereotypes- many of us were the band geeks in high school. We do just kind of represent a very eclectic grouping of people with psuedo-similar interests... and that's not, at all, a bad thing.

Be calm and respectful when you speak with them, and I hope it works out for you.

LOL @ out of oil....

sorry to hear your troubles... I had the same issue with my corolla back in the day... though... my rents prb stopped me from pissing a lot of money away on rice.

Anywho... things have calmed down in the Becker household... I still think we need to talk about meets though. She just doesn't want me going... I can understand where she's coming from, I just need to get her to trust me (and in extention all of you). That's the big issue, not the car. She doesn't want me "throwing my life away" at cars. But I think this has been a long time coming... I've liked cars and talked about them nonstop since I was like 10 years old. Did she expect me to turn that off when I turned 16? I try to explain that it's my hobby. That it's just like having a hobby of computers, video games, sports and whatnot. I just don't want to stop going to meets and being a part of Mazdateam most of all. I could have a 1989 rusted out 323... as long as I'm part of mazdateam, that's all that matters.

the check engine light is not going to be caused by anything you did to the car. I'm not going to really even comment on "loser car kids". Its unlikely that you will be able to change her opinion if that is how she feels. I would love to call some of the guys that have their own paddocks at Autobahn country club "loser car kids", it only costs $35000 to become a member. I wouldn't mind being one of those "losers".

so much for not commenting on it!

I moved out at 17. See where it got me? The same place I would have been at 18... except now I'm 22 and have a record. ;)

Do what your parents say. Let them see for themselves that we're entirely a group of blithering assholes.

Oh, I hear ya... and I agree with everything said in here. cept the whole, "we're not all blithering assholes"... speak for yourself! lol
