I have improved my mileage by adding ACETONE

Didn't hurt my paint. I was using shot glasses to measure it out. Kinda messy, but got the job done. A quart of it is like 2-3 bucks..

Cheap, and it comes in gallon cans at hardware stores, or in quarts at beauty supply stores. Babes use it as nail polish remover!

It may not have detrimental effects to the paint's appearance, but acetone will remove any waxes or sealants that are on the paint.

Dead serious... there's a bottle from Sally Beauty Supply on my girlfriend's dresser right now! And I'd be WAY cautious of getting it on the paint. I tried to use some to take spilled polish off of my DVD player's remote, and it melted the plastic!

hmmmm so i guess my next question is who thought to put it in there gas for better gas mileage.... there just sitting around and like hey ill put this nail polish remover in my gas tank and lets see what happens?

I'm wondering how this s*** can instantly remove nail polish, but not have any negative effects on engine seals and such.

Diluted. you could drink it if it was diluted in a gallon of water Read the like 20 page thread on it in the general performance thread.

As or my wax/paint....the isn't and wax or sealer on it anyway...just a crapload of dirt, dust, and grime. I haven't washed the car since last summer or so...

it's flamable i guess (blowup)

That was my thought, but I guess diluted into gasoline it's not such an issue. Just be careful putting it into the tank!

Acetone in nail polish concentration is some pretty strong stuff. If you rub it on a textured plastic surface, it melts the plastic slightly and makes it smooth. You save gas money with the extra mpg, but acetone ain't exactly cheap either... and how do you ever get 40 mpg? I've never gotten over 30.

This is my problem with using it, acetone is denser then gasoline, so if you pour this in your car, and lets say you go back home and have your car sit for a day or so , in weather that is below 45, the acetone will sink to the bottom of the tank, and the gasoline will rest on the top. Now I know 4 ounces isnt much but when you go to start your car the pump will be sucking in 100% acetone.

Now I do not know if this type of acetone is different from what I know of as acetone, there is lab acetone that has a hint of benzyol in it.Then there is photo lap acetone, they say it is 100% but i know for a fact it is not.

I will try it in my EK first, i love these types of experiments. I will tell you how it goes, it already gets 37MPG HWY

Gasoline is a pretty good solvent too and will disolve many of the same things that acetone will, but it's a heck of a lot more dangerous than acetone and you'd be pretty much out of your mind to remove nail polish with it. My point being that if the innards of an engine can stand up to 100% gasoline then they will probably stand up to 99% gasoline and 1% acetone, at least for a while. In any case, that little amount of acetone isn't going to munch through anything very quickly. Over a year or more of constant use, who knows?

One of the best sources I know of for seeing how fast chemicals eat through various rubbers and other flexible materials is:

gasoline: http://www.chemrest.com/gasoline ranking.htm
acetone: http://www.chemrest.com/acetone ranking.htm

This whole acetone in gasoline thing smells like an urban rumor to me. The links on the web all reference each other and there's apparently no well controlled study published by anybody reputable to support the idea. (If I'm wrong please provide the reference.)

I did this experiment a few months ago, added 4oz to my tank of gas and my gas mileage actually went down a little. I was going to try the same with a little less, but haven't gotten my hands on any more acetone yet. I will be interested to know what amount works the best.

My first time adding acetone gave me the most mileage ever. Second time I did not notice any difference and I figure it out why because I only added 2oz. per 10 gallons of gas. In my third fill up I added 4oz. of acetone per 10 gallons of gas. And I got my summer mileage which is about 40 miles to a gallon.

What kind of driving exactly do you do? Highway, city, etc. I drove like a GRANNY when I put the acetone in, and only got less fuel economy. Best I have ever gotten was almost 32mpg, but that was all highway w/o acetone during the summer.

I call bulls***, acetone has been around FOREVER..any gains some of you people are claiming are probably a placebo effect.

If it really worked, why aren't automotive companies promoting it as a gas saver? Unless its not good for your car, or it really doesn't work.
