I got painted..

Well, I want to start out by saying I don't generally plan on making a thread to recap my everyday friday night on this forum... it's just.. been a topical two weekends.

So, I'm in the Lake Villa area on Friday night.. going down Deep Lake Road at the intersection with Grand Ave. about to make the left onto Grand.

There's a white Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Big Horn in front of me and as the light changes and we turn through the intersection I watch as a gallon jug of paint falls from atop the toolbox and proceeds to roll under the pass side rear tire and .. covered.

White latex paint splattered all over the front and passenger side of my true red speed3. I was just.. stunned. I come to a stop trying to see if there was paint on the car and it hits me that this asshole is speeding away doing about 60 down Grand. So, I had a little fast and the furious moment drop the clutch.. in the rain.. spin the tires.. s*** to second, hook, and away I go. I do about 70 down Grand.. and how I didn't get caught by a cop the one time I really wouldn't have minded it I don't know.. and I catch up to this guy just before RJ's Bar. He sees me, changes lanes really quick and makes a turn. I choose not to follow, but I did get his plates. I pull into a parking lot.. call the police and get out to inspect my car.. and sure enough.. even after a wash.. I have white paint all over the side of my car.

I spent my Friday night in an interrogation room filling out a statement and this and that. The truck is registered to a business in Waukegan. The police called and left a message.

Ironically, I had an appointment to get detailed this Friday.. but now I'm not sure what I should do. It seems as though most the paint would buff out, a part of the can hit my hood and left a nice deep scratch, not to mention anyone with a keen eye will see that it looks like my car just took the money shot of the century. The police are contacting the company today do you guys think I should go through and make a claim with their insurance to get it repainted? Should I get it repainted (afraid of depreciating the value)? Should I contact them, see if they'll pay to get it detailed, and see what happens from there? I'm fairly frustrated at this point just because of a real lack of information I've gotten back from the police to this point (they say the investigators will look into it and get back to me within 5-10 business days).. any advise? Thoughts?

that blows, although i laughed at 'money shot of the century'.

(five-0)

Regarding if you should get it repainted or not: Which would have more value, a red True Red MS3 or a white one?

As a detailer, I'd say that detailing alone may not be able to get house paint off of your cars paint.

I'd wait and see what the police say, then call your insurance company and see what they suggest. they may have to repaint the car.

i'll do a little research on a detailing forum about housepaint and see if it'll come out easily for you in a second.

Post some pics of the damage. . .

Upon some searching it looks like if it was latex, and the car was recently waxed, it should be easy to remove. They have suggested WD-40 and or/a clay bar to remove the paint.

Good luck. If you take it to get detailed, expect it to cost about double (that's what I'd do) and remember to always tip your detailed if they do a good job!

From the conversation I had with the officer on Saturday night he read me off a list of about 8 tickets he could write the guy and said if they offer to just pay for my repairs he would let them off. Which I feel is a pretty fair deal. To be honest the damage is minimal with the exception of the pass side headlight and rear quarter fender. But there are white specs of paint everywhere. I'm fairly meticulous about my car's care and happened to wax it last weekend so.. I'm hoping that a detailer will be about to work it out. The scratches are another story. If they can get the paint off I would assume I'd contact a body guy to get them filled and maybe get the hood painted.

I'm twenty years old and I have a good enough job to support my habit, however, I'd really not like to involve my insurance company if at all possible. I'm already paying an obscene amount for coverage and I don't want to even risk my rates going up. We'll see where it goes.

I'll try and get some pictures up.

Thanks for the help.

oh dude, just try using a claybar like blue-sun said, if its white specks. i thought it was like, gallons of paint covering half your car.

That wouldn't have been an overstatement at the time. Luckily right after I showed the officer I had a bottle of quick detailer and a few terry clothes in my trunk and was able to clean off a majority of it. Right after I got out of the police station I went to a carwash and got a little more off. My hesitation is that what's stayed on there now is on there pretty firmly and I don't want to risk doing more damage trying to take it off. I'm going to see what these people say to the police and go from there, I suppose.

if this happened to me i would have... honestly i don't even know (my road rage is bad enough as it is, this would just be scary)

any news from the cops?

No one but a true car lover would keep the quick detailer in the trunk and ready for any emergency. (first)(breakn)

Welp. The police finally got back to me.

The guy claims the paint did not come from his truck.. and .. the investigator believed him. There is no liability on the driver of the truck because he faced an obstacle in the road and could not avoid it.

So.. I'm screwed. The investigator told me to try waxing it...?

I've avoided the topic simply because I've been a little pissed. I'm heading out on a road trip this weekend to Ohio. I guess the weekend after next I'll be taking out the clay bar and seeing what happens.

damn, that sucks. sorry to hear that. it pisses me off that people just don't care. if that was me i would have felt so bad for the guy behind me that i would have at least offered to pay for half. or just not be a dumbass and tie s*** down in the back of the truck!

That blows. So the guy says the paint didn't come from the truck, yet says he had to avoid an obstacle in the road, which probably knocked the paint off? WOW...

Wow man this really sucks! i'd keep fighting man. Its obvious this guys was at fault and should have had his stuff stowed better.

As for the paint. A good professional detailer should be able to take care of it. It can be done but will take some time. I just spent an entire day with a car that had been oversprayed with fence stain. A little easier since it was oil based but still the process is similar. If you want to try and tackle it yourself let me know and I can guide you on the process and the products needed. May have a reference for you in IL also.

Good luck man! I hope they step up and take care of this for you.
