I'm pretty sure not many of you seriously considered the mustang v8 when buying the ms3. However, after reading all the car magazine reviews about the new and improved 2010 mustang, I just had to go for a test drive and compare it to our ms3.

First off, the 2010 mustang is nice looking, inside and out. When I stepped in, the biggest difference was that the outward visibility wasn't as good as the ms3. But after turning on the ignition and hearing the v8, I really started liking it. As the revs go up, the v8 sounds even better. That's 1 area I don't like about the ms3: I like to rev to 5000+ RPM, but the turbo 4 sound isn't that good.

Of course, I chose to drive the manual GT, which felt pretty good. The shifter is shorter throw than the stock ms3. The clutch pedal is not as stiff as the ms3, and engagement was quite good. Being 4.6 L, there is definitely more low end torque, but above 4000 RPM, the ms3 feels just as strong.

Cornering ability was also pretty good for a muscle car. It didn't feel as heavy as I thought it would be. The GT is also less noisy than the ms3, both on the street and on the freeway. The ms3 has the exhaust drone which I don't like. The only significant noise with the mustang is the v8 roar when you hit the gas which sounds pretty good.

At the end of the test drive, I asked whether the salesman can sell it for invoice price. He said he could sell it for $500 under invoice. Wow, that puts it at about $26k before tax/title/license.

If I were really in the market right now, I would have chosen the mustang over the ms3.

I haven't driven one, but when I was on lots as a consultant for my mom when she was shopping for new cars, I can say that the brand new stangs look very nice in person. I've always wanted an American V8, but the MS3 was simply a better choice for me, considering it's gas mileage, utility, etc, though your portrayal of the Ford might make it worth my while looking at a used one in a couple of years, once I get settled in the new hometown.

I will say one thing about the writeup, tho, and it's that I can never understand how people can claim the Mazda's clutch to be stiff. Admittedly, I've never driven a standard Honda, which by most accounts appears to be the standard for soft clutches, but I have driven manual Toyotas and a Subaru for years, both of which are notably more difficult to depress than the MS3's. Maybe the individual cars really do vary more than I realize.

+1 My '02 WRX had a super stiff clutch pedal. I dreaded being in stop-n-go traffic.

Regarding the Mustang, if it were four door maybe. MS3 was the most practical choice for me since I want to be able to have fun when I'm driving, but it needs to accomodate the wife and future kid(s).

Glad you had fun on your test drive :)

The Mustangs are very cool. It is just a very different driving experience from the MS3. (V8 Growl effect, Camaro drivers pee on it, More chicks want you to spend money on them, You cant haul as many Pampers (In my case Depends!) in them. I don't feel well!

The Mustang needs a twin turbo V6, forget the V8. And maybe a 4-door version, I know it would be criminal to the die-hards but hell, the Charger did it.

V6 turbo and 4 doors? thats a joke. if you want that buy the Taurus SHO.

Not that I would want a new Taurus SHO, but they are deceptively quick. 13.7 quarters at 103 if I remember right. Think what a little light tuning to the ECU on that car might do with simple intake and exhaust.

im guessing 400whp is only a few grand away in the SHO.

Yeah, and the 'stang is pretty much locked into its 310 bhp unless you do some serious internal mods. They can be made strong, but it takes $$$$.

You can easily spray a 75 shot on a bone stock mustang. Lot's of people around here do it. With a gear, and slicks, most are getting into the 7's in the 1/8th. Now that the track pack has a good rear gear you just need the shot and slicks, lol. Maybe $1000 to get into 12's, lol.

I would think that the next version of the mustang drops the V8, you'd get just as much power with the twin V6, and Ford could save money by sharing it with the Taurus. I agree, though, I don't think it'll be a sedan, but the reason I got the MS3 was the very fact it had 4 doors. Ford has nothing aimed at "younger" people/families that has a bit of guts and 4 doors, so a variation of the Mustang would fit the bill (maybe it'll be the European Ford Focus?)

there's lots of talk that the next mustang will have the 5.0 again....the 5.0 will be shared with the trucks. instead of sharing a engine with sedans.....

Yeah the 5.0l coyote engine, its supposed to be loads better than the current motor. I hear thats why most are waiting on the GTs.

What does the Bullitt have that the 2010 GT doesn't? If I'm not mistaken the 2010 GT with track pak performs better than the Bullitt in every way.

I like the pre-facelift styling and a used Bullitt is nearly $10K less expensive. If I'm going to spend @$35K I'll just find a nice E46 M3 ZCP or 135i M Sport.
