I can't take off the Oil Filter!!

Not too far, it's in the middle of the engine about half way down, probably not even that far, hard to explain!

That's what I use, well not a glove but one of those jar openers; if you know what I mean. You can really get a good grip!!

You know what they say about guys with small hands....

They can reach the oil filter from the top:D

alexlitov - that was funny!

I really wish I could explain how I get to the filter from the top, but everything I've said before is about the best I can do. I see everyone thinks I must be full of myself or some kind of midget, but I just stumbled across it one day cause I thought I might be able to get to it from the top. You do have to reach in a bit, but not too far. I can do it, and I really don't see why anyone else wouldn't be able to do it, unless you got fat arms! Wait I finally thought of a way... Here's a pic!

It's about mid-way down under the engine cover. Hope that helps a bit more.

Hey guys,

Try replacing the tiny protege oil filter with the oil filter from a 626 V6. The V6 filter fits perfectly. Not only is it about 50% longer (perhaps making it easier to reach from the top), but there is more filtering area to boot. Cost is the same. I used this little trick on my 94 Protege DX before I bought my P5.

I have got to say that the filter location is probably the worst I have ever seen on any car I've owned. I thought that my old 87 Civic and the wife's last car, Integra GSR, were bad but this one sucked. Pissed me off so much I just dropped the lower support memeber for better area and still had to go get a filter wrench.

I think I'm just going to put a relocation kit on it and put the filter somewhere that is much more accessable. I don't feel like going through that every month and I have to since my wife does about 30,000 mile a year.

This is exactly what I use. (thumb)

Nothing better than the filter location on an RX7. Just pop the hood and it's one of the first things you see. Its right on top of the engine. Man I miss that!

I think I figured it out, by your picture. Although our engines are the same, there seems to be a bunch of other "barriers" up in that corner on the P5 (which explains why those who have done it as MSP owners while we P5 owners have no luc). Unless a P5 owner has done it thru the top....either way..off to Walmart to buy some Rhino Ramps.

You must be refering to the cruise control drum.

As I stated earlier, I use the ramps cuz I have to get under the car. If I were to go from the top I would probably burn my arm on the HOT engine. You DO change it HOT, DONT YOU!!!(flame2) (laugh)

I just figured out it's really easy to reach mine from the top! But that's cause I have a nice big first gen engine bay :D . It doesn't make it any easier, IMO, actually. I still like going at it from below.

Greg - Any luck with a relocation kit?

I'm not reading thru this whole damn post, but FYI:

If you ever have a lot of trouble getting a filter off (hands, socket, filter plyers don't work) you can impail the filter with a looong screwdriver, and pry that bastard off. Had to this once, only thing that would work. Just make sure you have the right filter to replace it before you start.

I've had to do this before too, and I was also coming in this thread to recommend that as a last alternative. :)

A little messy, but gets this job done.

I would find a different alternative first...if you do it wrong and hit the nipple the filter threads on to -- you're F'ED!!!

I guess I'll find out once I change my own oil in December! Nothing like hot oil running down your arm to keep you warm when you're changing your own own in an unheated garage during winter. Can you spell F-U-N?

The screwdriver didn't work for me, but only collapsed the filter. Just buy a big-ass pair of plier, and you will never have this issue again!!!
