looking for a nice htib for my parents for x-mas... would like the price less then 5bills but would consider a bit more if there is a significant reason... done some looking at target/bestbuy/circuit city and saw some stuff i liked and some absolute crap...

the room it is going in is huge... 26' wide and 42 long. so it needs to be able to fill the void that is there living room. they would mostly be using it for movies and the occasional sporting event. really no music... they dont' have anything that works that well now so if it is an option would prefer one with a built in progressive scan dvd player. but its not a deal breaker.

thanks for the help guys/gals and keep the ideas coming

well, first.... whats the main use going to be for? Music? movies? mostly television? etc. Also are they going for the best sound quality? do they care about space? is low frequency (bass) important to them?

Ill help ya out :)...

please enlighten me, I cant reach best buy @ work...

what brand/model #?

my only REALY complaint about that system - not a lot of versatility. It has GREAT sound quality for the price (better than similarly priced samsung and sony units which retail the same or higher in price). HOWEVER, theres not many inputs making it harder to upgrade/add on in the future.

I remember the older models not having it, and I dont see it listed. Does it even have an optical or digital coax input?

ALSO! with the size of their room Id worry about its ability to fill the room with sound at normal volume.

yeah..... not a single digital input (IE no HD in true 5.1 surround). I know they do make a version with that input, but in leiu of the dvd player.

In either event, it really depends on what tsunamis parents need. This might work great if they are looking for more simplicity rather than sound quality/versatility. Definately a great option for someone not currently HD and wants an easy to use system with better sound quality @ a good price.

EDIT: LOL! just read its for yourself... Whats the rest of your setup? (TV, game systems, etc.)

yeah i would prefer something that would be compatible with hd as they are going to upgrade tv's soon as well. it would mostly be used for movies and tv/sports. not a lot of use for music in their living room, the entertianing is done elsewhere in the house. i am sure my dad would like a nice low end system but its not a deal breaker... i have a lot of knowedge for car audio and can probably piece together a good system for a home set up but i think htib is the way to go for them so once i hook it up for them it will be more user friends as i am intimdated by some of the recievers out on the market today.

i saw a bose system that sounded nice but it didn't seem to have jack s*** for inputs... and a saw a couple phillips ones that didn't look like that would fill a dorm room with sound....
