Installing an HKS Turbo Timer

Background
~~~~~~~~~~
This post will outline the installation of an HKS turbo timer in the bottom
compartment under the climate controls.
I decided to mount the TT in the center console for these reasons:
1) to keep it hidden
2) the bottom compartment is nearly useless for anything else
3) there isn't any other place to put in on/in the dash.
The only other choice for hidden mounting you have is to mount it in the glove
compartment.
What You'll Need
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

User Supplied:

Wire (I used 14 gauge),
9 female "bullet" connectors (crimp type)
9 male "bullet" connectors (crimp type)
1 wire tap connector
Double faced tape
Velcro strips

Tools:
Multimeter or voltmeter
Electrical tape
Pliers
Wire cutters

Time: 1-2 hours

Installing The Wires
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First off, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery (or don't if you
like to live on the edge)
Locate the ignition harness which should be below the ignition cylinder. You
are looking for 3 wires: Red (Power), Blue (Ignition) & Black/White (Accessory).
I cut off the connector (since there is no wiring harness available for the
Mazdaspeed.). Now you will want to connect the Red to Red, Blue to Blue and
Green to Black/White. One the ignition harness, I used the Blue and Red wires
that were in parellel with each other.
Next, locate the parking brake switch wire. On my car, this wire ran up from
the parking brake, behind the shifter area. This wire should have about +12
volts with the parking brake off and 0 volts with it on. Use the wire tap and
the HKS supplied GRAY wire to tap into this wire.
Connect the BLACK wire from the TT to the vehicle chassis (ground).
Cut the wires of the 3-4 adapter at the middle point. Strip about 1cm of the
wire sheathing from each of the wires and crimp on either the male or the female
bullet connectors. I decided to use bullet connectors so that the wiring harness
can be removed later on if needed. You could directly solder these wires if
you wanted to.
Additionally, you may want to use some electrical tape to hold all the wires
together in one bundle.
Route the new extension "bus" through the left side of the cable
guide that runs below the ashtray and heater controls. I routed the wires
through the left side of the front on the console. The wires are hidden and
I did not have to drill a hole in the back of the console.
If you want to run the additional Tachometer, you will need to connect the
Orange wire to the Purple/White wire off of the ECU.
At this point, you may want to check your wiring for shorts using the multimeter
*BEFORE* you apply the power to it.
Testing the Turbo Timer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you are satisfied with your wiring, reconnect the negative side of the
battery and test the turbo timer as per the HKS instructions. Make sure that
the safety cut-off switch from the parking brake works. (If the timer is activated
and the parking brake is released, the engine should shut off immediately).
If the timer is activated without the parking brake engaged, the engine should
shut off in about 5 seconds.

Operation of Turbo Timer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you didn't receive any english instructions on the operation of the timer,
here is a brief synopsis of the functions: The timer has two basic modes of
operation, TIMER mode and ADD mode.
TIMER Mode
----------
ON/OFF - Turn the timer on or off. Unless the timer was manually turned off,
the timer will automatically turn ON (but not activate) with the ignition each
time the vehicle is driven, and the time previously selected will also be retained
in memory.
SELECT TIME - To select the idle time, press the UP or DOWN button to toggle
to the desired time. The available selections are as follows:
0.00s - 0.30s - 1.00s - 1.30s - 2.00s - 2.30s - 3.00s -
4.00s - 5.00s - 6.00s - 7.00s - 8.00s - 9.00s - 9.59s -
9.99s
RESET TIME - To reset the time to 0.00s, press the UP and DOWN buttons simultaneously
for at least 1 second.
ALTERNATING DISPLAY - To make the display alternate between the initial time
selected and the time remaining in the countdown, press the UP and POWER buttons
simultaneously for at least one second. (Be sure to press the UP button first)
Press the sequence a second time to stop the alternating display.
RESET TURBO TIMER - To reset all functions and modes (including the cumulative
hours recorded in the ADD mode), press the ALARM and POWER buttons simultaneously.
(Be sure to press the ALARM button first)
ADD MODE (Engine Hour Meter)
----------------------------
ON/OFF - When the timer is in TIMER mode, press the ALARM and DOWN buttons
simultaneously for at least one second. The cumulative number of hours the
engine has running should appear on the display. To return to TIMER mode, press
the sequence a second time. If the ignition key is turned OFF, the display
will revert to the TIMER display automatically. The timer will revert back
to ADD mode the next time the car is started. (ie. whichever mode the timer
is in, TIMER or ADD, will be remembered and restored)
FLASHING DISPLAY - The timer can be programmed to flash ON and OFF while in
ADD mode to indicate that the timer is recording the number of hours of engine
operations. To turn the flashing display on or off, press the UP and POWER
buttons simultaneously for at least one second. (Be sure to press the UP button
first)
RESET TIME - To reset the cumulative hours recorded in the ADD mode, press
the UP and DOWN buttons simultaneously for at least one second.
RESET TURBO TIMER - To reset all functions and modes (including the cumulative
hours recorded in the ADD mode), press the ALARM and POWER buttons simultaneously.
(Be sure to press the ALARM button first)
Thanks for a highly detailed thread!(thumb) I got my turbo timer a couple of weeks ago and kept putting off the install because of the wiring questions I had. But your post has got me ready to start. Although I have the Apexi tt, it should be pretty much the same with only few variables. Thanks again.
Help!...
very helpful How to...however i have some ?s...
I just spent several hours installing my HKS Type 0 and it seems to be OK so far, it will do the countdown OK, but the engine does not run once I remove the key (just like w/o a TT)...in other words, no mater what mode I select, I cannot get the TT to activate.
Anyway, I remembered the p-brake wire and used the appropriate 3 wires on the IGN harness. Somebody help!
Where to begin troubleshooting?...
Thanks!
Oh well, at least the installed looks great!!
same problem
hmm, at least 3 people have this problem? How do we fix it? I run the car pretty hard so I need it to idle before I shut it off. That's the reason I bought the timer, but I never know if it will work or not.
only solution i found was to tap the gas up to bout 1000 rpms then shut the car off fast and the timer kicks in. Only problem the car turns off then turns back on for like a split second. I hate it to be honest and haven't used the turbo timer much bc of this problem.
I found the same thing
It must be in the wiring. DOn't worry, I solve the problem tomorrow.
All fixed. The wiring was wrong because the instructions by phase1 were wrong. There is no technique to shut the car off or need to rev or turn the key fast or none of that!!! I works like a charm everytime now. Check your wiring. Just follow the instructions provided by HKS. I should've known better.....
