and I finished off by compressing the rest of the piston in with a used brake pad or a thin piece of metal.

- All I can suggest is to not crush your new dust seal and reinstall everything carefully.
- if you want to change the rest of the rubber bits go ahead. Use proper brake lube and clean the sliders off first.
- Don't forget to bleed the brakes!
- Enjoy saving $$$

piston installs

I have a 99 Miata , and wonder if the pistons (oem stock)
are Stainless (nickle steel) or just plain steel (rusting)?
does anyone know.???

I am doing a major rebuild and would replace pistons if rusted. but would rather just order them in advance.
If they are SST I would not replace them.

I can add one more step to this process.
the grove in the caliper, itself should be spotless ,as this
contact point provides the OTHER seal point.
It must be free of old dried Glycerine , scale or any rust.
Best done with a drimmel tool and brass brush wheel.

then apply the special grease behind this seal point and this will help to keep moisture from hiding there.
Just tiny thin layer is best.

Ok , I hope some one can answer my question about pistons ?
good day to all.

Good job.
Also, while you have the piston out, take a good look at the cylinder bore. If it's grungy/rusty clean it up with some emory cloth etc. and flush well with brake fluid. Feel the bore for even smoothness. You may want to lightly hone the bore with a 3-stone brake hone & brake fluid, but don't overdo it. Again, make sure you flush it all clean with brake fluid before assembling.
