Nice work on everyone's painted rims.

Thanks to this thread I decided to give up the bronze/polished rim look and go for flat black.

There was no clearcoat before and no primer was needed. The spokes themselves were a bit rough in texture, but obviously the polished lip was smooth.

No clearcoat afterwards either (brakedust eats through that).

I'm glad to say that after a few weeks the paint is holding nicely on the polish lip.

As far as sanding the bondo? Then no, a dremel would not work well. It would take off to much and it wouldn't smooth out evenly. It's best to do it by hand.

i mean the initial sanding of the wheel. not of the bondo.

You could use the dremel for the curb rash and errosion areas but I wouldn't use it for sanding the rest of the rim

^ I agree; you only need to sand off a VERY thin part of the original paint. The point of sanding before painting (I recommend something around the 600grit level, maybe even 1000), is for there to be more surface area for the new paint (preceded by primer of course) to stick to the rim.

Placement of jackstand

I put my car up on stands in the front, and put the rear up by a jack stand in the center.

I only have 2 jackstands, so what is the best placement to use so I don't end up with the car on the garage floor. (uhm)

I'm trying to gather as much info as I can because I have a 2002 that needs the rims repainted. I've found lots of great info on the painting but I've never used jackstands before.

FINALLY decided to finsih the job on my tires and paint the centre caps. Thinking it turned out GREAT!

Now I just need to lower it, and paint those damn chrome headlight housings black and she'll be SCHWEET!!

Place the jackstands next to the garage wall opposite the door, so you don't back into them when you head out to the store to buy two more jackstands.

To clarify: You cannot support an entire car on two jackstands. You will have to do two wheels at a time, or buy/borrow two more.
