How To: Repair curb rash and paint rims

I would do black if I were you. Gunmetal does not look good on yellow cars in my opinion. I only like gunmetal on white, black, titanium, blue, and maybe red paint jobs.

Nice job Canadianzoom. Are those black or gunmetal?

Also, does anyone know if using regular spray paint would be ok on wheels? Cause there are alot more colors to choose from in regular metal paint then just duplicolor. Anyone have any pictures of the duplicolor bronze on there wheels?

Well, I said I would probably only be able to get camera phone pix, and I don't think I'll be able to get some better ones before this weekend for you, so here are two pix I took tonight which give you a pretty good idea. The up-close one is a bit lighter then the real colour (I tried to get the brightness as low as possible but it's just a camera phone right? (boom04)), but the overall car one is pretty close to the real colour. Hope this helps you in your decision...

if you are going to use regular paint i'd use the engine enamel since its thicker. the wheel paint is just made to not deteriorate because of brake dust and a few other things.

Thats sweeeet. I think that pic just convinced me to paint mine gunmetal (glare) . Awesome work (looks great even from the camera phone). Thanks a bunch for the picture. What did you do with the center caps, paint or no paint?

No worries man, and yes I did paint the centre caps...I think it gives off a better, cleaner look. If you want a great effect, paint your "flying M" on the front grill the same colour. I love the overall look of the car with it. I just took a couple of pix (only one good one came out)...unfortunately there wasn't enough light for you to see the overall effect, but you'll get the idea. It takes a couple of coats of the paint plus a couple of quick coats of the clearcoat on top (make sure that you put real thin layers of paint otherwise the clearcoat will screw up your work since you have to put it on fairly quickly (follow the directions at the back of the duplicolour bottles). I had to start over because the clearcoat lifted the paint from the emblem due to my layers being way too thick. You can easily do this as you are doing the rims. Let me know what you think.

all of them have guiding pins :( they were a pita. i ended up using a scraper form pampered chef to get them off. the fishing line wouldn't work well b/c of the pins. use the line to start and an ID or OLD credit car or somethin to get btwn the pins

EDIT: well i'm off for the night. be back in the morning

I like the black rear one against the yellow paint, but the black on black on the front, not so much. I'm a bigger fan of just getting a new grill and losing the front M entirely.

Mp3Performance, They're black, some have commented they think they look too much like stealies, which i guess I can see...but i just love the contrast of black on silver that I don't care....plus they shine more then any stealies I've ever seen! :D

i'm a poor college kid. can't afford it :(

Maybe so, but you can always proud to say that YOU did the work...I know I enjoy seeing the fruits of my labour turn out well :D

LMAO - Tell me about it, I just painted my rims instead of buying actual ones.

Being poor sux.

I feel good about having done this myself...but i'd feel even better if these were my winters and I had a set of Enkei's for the summer. (2thumbs)

tried doing this on the mx5, but i messed up as i tried doing only a spot fix, and not the entire wheel... issue was i tried to cut corners and ended up with what I have right now.

Yep, this is deffinately one of those mods that you can't cut corners. But good news is it's always easy just to sand and redo, in your case I would just repaint the whole rim.

good thing is lol i have 4 wheels, the first one was the botched job, next is the other wheel, and i'll see if i can spot fix it, if that doesnt work out, i might as well paint the entire thing. but yeah, its pretty easy to do this, and spend less than $50 on materials.
