The C-field stuff posted on the first page helped me to get in there. I had (still have) a problem with the window actuator assembly. The switch is fine...the motor is fine...the little plastic piece where the pulleys make the window go up and down is broken.

For me, there was no yanking. Pages 1-3 weren't needed to pull the panel. Those are just for the radio. Pages 4-5 are the only two you'll need to get the front door panels off. However, you'll need to know one simple piece not in those instructions:

The last line of the instructions at 4b, the part about the passenger's door, also applies to the 4a section for the driver's door. "Remove two (2) phillips screws from recessed holes exposed by removal of handle (Figure 7)."

Maybe that line should be "4c. Final screw removal for BOTH driver's and passenger's door."

I'm guessing this is where the yanking and jerking is coming in. I knew it couldn't be that hard to pull it off. Turns out, I was right.

Good luck to the next person to Google "mazda protege door panel removal" and end up here. I hope you read this before you get too far into jerking and yanking. =-)

thanks for this post i put something up like this a few days ago everyone looksed and no one helped...

You want to make sure you're removing only the outer part of the handle. I managed to remove the entire forward part of the handle--big screw pulled out of the plastic fitting inside the door. Then had to remove the outer handle from the inner handle.

I suspect that if you're doing it the right way, not quite so much force is needed.

I'm doing this to fix a lock actuator. Got the actuator out, opened it up, and found a broken white plastic piece inside. Any chance I'll be able to only buy that piece, and not the entire actuator? Probably not...

Update: actually, you can, but the price is a little steep for two pieces of plastic, $14+shipping. Search
"2002-03 Mazda Protege Door Lock Actuator Repair Gear & Travel Slide" on ebay.

I wouldn't buy just the gears, I do wish there was a better alternative. I have only had to replace one lock actuator so far but it wasn't fun.

Greetings. I have successfully removed both front door panels and both rear door panels, to replace all four speakers (2002 Protege5); as well as put everything back together successfully. Let me tell you, the rear doors are a pain, but once you get the handle off, you are good to go, the rest is easy. I have some instructions attached, the next set will follow.

Thanks for the pic's. The handle was the biggest problem. Too bad the (DEALER) told me the rear speak's were 5x7's. Now I gotta take em back. Oh well, at least I got the panels off. Live and learn.
