How-To: Fix KDC-919 (56k unfriendly)

I think I miss something. The front motorized assembly went out and I've been able to remove the black cover. But I'm unable to flip the unit at this point:

Can someone help?

Thanks

I'm not sure what you're getting at, flip the unit how? Can you be more specific?

Edit: Judging from the picture above(just noticed it was one of Moeeds) all you need to do is remove the screws and move the cable.

Here where I am: The black cover is removed like this:

But I cannot see the screws to remove because de face plate is in one piece.

How can I go to this point?

Grest How to man !!! I just finished up fixing my Kenwood. Is this s perment fix or will the new ribbon cable mess up like the last one ?

Yay, I finally got it done. So far so good 'cept the face trips up a lil when it flips (obviously nothing to do with the ribbon), but hopefully i can tweak that as time goes on. So happy to have the kenwood back as the OLD ass pioneer i been runnin with SUCKED. Thanks for the write-up, don't have the cash to shell out for a new unit, this helped a bunch.

Bump for any info on Tyler's question above. Anybody have a problem since they replaced the ribbon?

Does anyone have pictures on how to remove the sock Kenwood head unit? I tried to use the paper clips to take it out, but without any success. Please tell me where do I need to insert the "keys". Thanks.

ANyone have an updated link for the replacement ribbon? The link in the 2nd post doesn't work any more.

Im trying to pull my HU out of his hole, but it seems to be stuck somehow halfway thru! Any idea on what could cause this? Could it be a wire behind the HU that is simply stuck?

Thanks

Wrong place to post the question. This is for the how-to only, and questions about the how-to. Any ways, a stuck wire is likely your problem. I ripped apart an antenna wire trying to pull mine out, but luckily I could fix it. Reach your hand up from underneath the dash on the passengers side and jiggle the wires around while pulling the head unit out. It should budge.

Ok ok sorry and thanks for the information!

New Part Number for Replacement Cable

Best buy no longer stocks the cable, as they so politely informed me today. I searched our part number and came upon
http://www.pacparts.com
the original part number
J84-0121-12
seems to be discontinued, and there is a newer, and hopefully more reliable replacement part number
J86-0021-05
From what I read on the other forum, you can also purchase a new connector plate instead of reusing your old one, I will ask pacparts about this when I call them on Tuesday.
I am going to be ordering 2 of these and seeing if it is the same part. Great how to, thanks for the time and effort.
search for the
KDCMP919
and there is a whole bunch of parts available, on back order and discontinued part numbers cross referenced to newer part numbers, excellent.

I know you're not asking me, but I will answer from my experience. I got a new connector plate, but only because I destroyed the one on my first head unit. The second time I did this with another head unit, I was able to de-solder the connector plate, remove it from the broken ribbon cable, and solder a new ribbon cable back on. It wasn't that hard to do.

great thanks for the reply...I'll just order the ribbon and try and de-solder the old connector plate.
