So this winter hit my car hard enough in rust that I wanna fix the appearance. Never done rust repair but am I right in understanding, its sanding, primer, wet sanding, and paint to match? Here's some pics. Thanks for the help/suggestions!
If the rust has not eaten through the metal all the way, then you can sand, prime with primer/sealer, then paint. You have to sand until there is nothing but shiny clean metal exposed. I agree that the fender is probably too deep to sand out though, and will need cutting and replacing. Honestly that kind of stuff is best left to a body shop, as it takes some skill and experience to get right. The rusted area needs to be cut out, and then a patch panel welded in. The welds then have to be ground flush, smoothed with filler, then finally you can prime/paint. Here's a patch panel: http://www.fixmyrust.com/1999-2004-...-side-rear-fender-patch-panel--W2569558L.html
I cleaned up rust on the body of a honda crx I owned it was on the door so not a very difficult location. but its time consumining and indeed a pain in the ass matching paint is a little difficult too since over time the paint fades if your putting only a new coat on 1 panel it stands out. your hood and trunk look doable but repairing the rust on the wheel well looks like a tough job i would definitely take that part to a body shop.
i repaired the rust on my trunk where the emblems are.
i took off the emblems, sanded with 40 grit sand paper, sprayed rust converter used bondo body filler, sanded the filler, primer, wet sand with 400 grit, base coat, sand to blend in, second coat, sand, third coat. i got the can of paint from napa auto parts.
i also did the passenger rear fender.
good luck man and it doesn't how it turns out because it will look much better than rust.
also i forget to mention that this is temporary fix.
I would pay someone to fix that rust if you really like the car. IMO as soon as you sand down the panels to remove the rust that you can see right now you will find all kinds of rust. that fender defiantly looks like it needs to be cutout and a new piece of metal welded in. you can never stop rust on these cars just slow it down..
