How to buy a used CX5 ?? (tips please)

Hi everyone,

I found a CX5 Grand Touring with tech package with ~6k miles for $25k . Will try to lower this price when I get to the dealer. However, this is in a Honda dealership, not a Mazda so I'm not sure if I'm going to be covered under warranty. I guess my question is, can anyone share a few tips on how to go about buying this car?

Should I buy a third party extended warranty?

Any advise is appreciated since I've only bought a new car before and a used car WAYYY past its warranty period.

3rd party warranties are garbage, save your money.

And buying a used CX-5 is no different than buying any other used car. Just check it over well and look for signs of issues. I'd say with 6k miles there's probably nothing wrong with it...

Correct. 3yr-36k mile bumper to bumper and 5yr-60k mile powertrain warranty will both transfer.

Mazda does not offer free maintenance. Price seems high for my liking but I've never priced a used CX5 before.

Is it AWD or FWD? Is it a Touring or Grand Touring model? You mentioned it had the Tech package so I'm assuming its not a Sport. Does it have 17" or 19" wheels?

Its a Grand Touring with tech package. FWD with 19'' wheels.

I was able to negotiated to 23.5k. I think its a fair deal, no? This was all online, I will try to go to the dealer i bring it down a little bit more.

Ha! that's the plan. Its soo hard to find its true value since there aren't many used around

yeah, cant even look it up on KBB....only used CX-5 i could find within 250 miles of me so it's probably the same one you're looking at haha

Ohh sooo closeeeeeeee.......here's what happened. So I went to the dealer, saw the car. It had no issues. Sat down to negotiate, they were not willing to drop anything less than $23,500. With my current car I pay 0% financing, so I was expecting either 0 or anything around 0.9%. They said since it's a used car (not new) they can't drop the financing, so they will charge me AT LEAST (with excellent credit) 4.9%. So it breaks down like this:

USED: $26,500 OTD + financing = $480 for 60 months = $28,800
NEW: $28,683 + tax + title + 0% financing = $30,000

I think i'd rather get a new one, with the color I want...

The numbers do work out a lot differently if you refinance through a credit union (for 2013 most don't care if it is previously titled/used) or if you pay it off early... Just food for thought.

You're not adding in the tax for a new CX-5 - In addition, how much are they going to give you for a trade (which will impact how much you pay in taxes on either). How many miles are on this used CX-5? In the end it looks like you might save $3-4k, which for a near new car is a great deal if the only impact is a few miles.

looks like he is adding in tax. the tax difference should be less than $500 any unless their tax rate is crazy high. based on my quick math he isn't trading any vehicle in since a $23.5k sale price + my local tax rate works out to $481/mo at 4.9% with zero down. The OP is probably right that getting a new one is probably worthwhile since the total cost will only be ~$2300 more after all payments are made.
