How-to: +2psi for a cheap $5

For the doubting people please see:

Maximum Boost by Corky Bell, page 151, figure 12-18 (Chapter 12: Boost control, section called "fooling the wasgate")

tried it and it works perfectly.

I did it from the bottom looking up and I think it is indeed easier.
However, I do not suggest anyone to hook the wastegate side onto the vaccum nipple. The spring will eventually eat into the vaccum fitting and you will just be in more trouble by then.

I hook mine onto the the edge that sticks out right in the middle and around the wastegate...... (um..... I don't know how much better I can describe it. Hope you guys get the picture)

The good thing about this is, it will not damage anything since everything is on metal to metal. The worst case will be the hook coming loose from the edge of the wastegate and there I lose my spring and back to stock boost.

MBC are not that great of an idea. Save the money and get a EBC. then you can program boost by RPM because our fuel system will lean out if we boost 12 psi to redline. 2 psi increase should be okay but I would worry about spiking or somthing getting stuck...then its trouble as you will boost to the moon if the wastegate gets stuck in the open position.

Nice cheap fix but a nice APR wastegate acutator is like $59...it will prevent spiking alot better then stock actuator...which may save your engine. And for $80 you can find a adjustable one.

I would personally recommed replacing the Wastegate actuator in general. I beleive Mazda has a TSB for it from what my tech said. he told me to contact him if theres weird spikes. Now they cant really give me crap for boost gauge because its saving them warrenty work and time by monitoring boost.

Nice write up ;)

I tried this today and it took literally 5 minutes to do everything. I took the intercooler pipe off and it was easy enough to even put it on with my fingers. Runs pretty good, cant get much better for $5

i read it. im still wondering about it since i have an aftermarket wastegate ( stock replacement but spring is at 9psi. i would love to run an extra 2 or 3 psi

has anyone tried to put on a different sized spring? or a second one?

if you had springs you will increase boost more.
you can get at 17 psi if you want

I thought you could only get around 2psi regardless... something to do with the length of the rod?

If I remember correctly Blkzoom had 4 or 5 springs since it needed to boost at 17 psi.

Anyhow, you could buy a different arm which will allow you to run what you want.

The psi increase is proportional to the extending capabilities of the spring... take a 2lbs spring and you'll have... 2psi increase... 3lbs spring and you'll have 3psi increase...

Select a spring with the right lbs rating for the same number of psi incrase you want.

i tried it today. big mistake, i need some different plugs. it started pingin. any recommendations on plugs.

That was with a 10psi actuator and a mbc. It was 2 springs around 18-20psi. The more springs didn't make a difference.

Wow... how much were you boosting? I use the NGK ZFR7F-11 plugs. They've been awesome ever since 10k miles. I have 45k now.

its time to change your plugs again buddy

So my question is, is this a mod for a stock msp. Or would any mods be needed, i see some say to run colder plugs, but is that a must ?
