How the heck do you remove the oil filter?

It's like all the way up here, and there's freaking suspension thing in the way, so I have to move my arm around it to get to the oil filter. What tool can I use?

just reach your arm up there.. It might be tight so a non slip bottle opener sometimes helps. I use an old rubber fitting from my Intercooler piping and it grips great. They also make a adapter at pepboys that fits over the filter, but you shouldn't need it.

I was able to take mine off with my hand. You're right that it's pretty much impossible to use a filter wrench on because it's in such a bad spot. The Shop Manual shows some kind of adapter for a ratcheting socket wrench that fits over the end of the filter.

From the factory, the filter is really screwed on there tight, and it's impossible to get leverage with it way up there. I use a Filter Wrench--not a socket adapter--and it works pretty well. You can get them at Sears.

My filter wrench just slipped as I turned it. So, I took a screwdriver, taped a screw to the end of it, and jammed it into the filter. It took a while before I could get the screw to catch. No oil leaked out of it btw. Then, with the screw preventing the filter wrench from sliding around the filter, I got the filter wrench to grip and turn the filter.

Subsequent filters will be tightened less, and/or have a nut welded onto the back end of it so that I can grab it with a ratchet.

u gotta fkn put some muscle into it. took me forever to twist it off by hand, but i eventually got it. dont forget to oil your new filter so u dont have the same problem later - chris

Man, after like 3-4 freaking hours, I finally finished it. I went to Sears, and Pep Boys twice just to get the stuff I needed. I put in Mobil 1 Synthetic, woohoo!!!

Oh yeah, why the heck is our oil filter so small compared to other cars?

Pulling that filter off the first time was a real pain in the butt. I got a self-tightening filter wrench from Sears. Got it off in about 20 minutes. The next time should be much easier.

When I've done an oil change I do not remember oil EVER running out of the filter. I usually let the pan drain from anywhere from 30 min to an hour and then remove the filter. Usually dry by that point.

Wish is sat straight up and down so it would always be full. Cut down on start-up-starvation.

I use a filter wrench as well. A little snap on gift from the neighbor across the street for HS graduation. Get one, they work great. Destroys the filter but you're recycling it anyway

yeah... wear a rubber glove and just reach up there and twist it. should be hard. make sure you take some old (or fresh) oil and lube the rubber rim of the oil filter. that way it lubricates it and makes a nice seal. next time, you won't have trouble taking it off.

I used a pice of twine and looped it around it to get it started....from there you just need some muscles Olive Oil(boobs2) j/k! Next time get a Fram oil filter or some brand with a built in grip on the end...

I just put some Mobil 1 in my ride too and that s*** is like liquid ball barings (sp?) (burnout)

DO NOT GET FRAM.

Wix is a good, easy to find brand.

Also, if you change the oil when the oil's warm(NOT hot) the filter is easier to take off. ;)

Why not Fram? Is that a bad company? (shrug)

Also, just confirming what others have said: No oil leaks out of the filter when you take it off right?

I saw that funky angle it was positioned at, and I was scared that it would leak oil all over the place, so I actually took it in for an oil & filter change. First time in years that I actually had to pay for that. $30 for 15 minutes of labor and $4 of materials... (pissed)

Who knows about the whole Fram thing? I've used Fram filters for years on my other cars without any issues.

Of course, on the Protege, I'm only putting on Mazda OEM filters and Mobil1!
