How much would you pay?

so our family needs another car, and I suggested a p5 and they liked
but the only problem is the price

so I told them i'd learn stick, not that hard done it before (gotta start sometime) and gave them some prices at autotrader so they have an idea

so we went to the dealership looking to buy
two p5s
silver with moonroof 36100
black without 33000
both 2002s

black one is out of the question since it didn't start until the third time
the manager looked stupid then
plus everyone else looked presentable and he wore a nasty gold chain, chest hair showing out of his unbuttoned short sleeve dressshirt which was untucked
who would want to buy from him anyway.....but

so we test drove the car, ran pretty smooth, i'm still a bit shaky with the clutch but i'm sure i'll get used to it

so the price for the silver one is 16,900
there's no way it's worth that much

so my question is how much is it really worth?
how much would it be for dealer and us to get a good deal?

prices are in canadian
and clicks are in km

I bought mine p5 new in 03 and got it for 13,900~
When I see them on the net they go 9-11k and in the local paper they were 10-13k for 03's

I got my 03 white protege spankin new with full option(except leather) for around 15500.

16k for used 02 p5 would be too much, from my view

see that's good
we could have bought the car for $15250 CDN on the spot, but thought that was still expensive
seeing how it's a 2002 p5, meaning it's a 3 year old car now, since the new 2005 model cars (not necessarily mazda) are coming out

would a potential car owner think this was a good deal, or am i still paying too much? i just don't want to get ripped by "Greasy McCardealer" at the mazda dealership (he smelt bad too) hahaha

maybe you could post the options that the silver p5 has. i will tell you one thing, even well equipped $16000 is too much

well from what i can tell it's fully loaded, it has the moonroof option on it
but no power seats
not sure about the ABS since i didn't want to slam on the brakes with everyone in the car (although i should have)
don't think it had a 6 cd changer
5 speed manual
with 36100 kms
what else is there besides all the standard options?

i bought my 02 white .. everything but the moonroof ...26k miles at a dealer for 9,500...just to give you an idea ... if you look hard enough you can find a deal

Ppl, keep in mind these are canadian prices... kinda a different story...

Talk to him. Negotiate. Be prepared to walk away. Dealers are always flexible. Try to get the price down $500 or more. Maybe even $1000+.

ok, try kbb.com (kellybluebook) and put in your options and see what the price is... u might have to convert USA currency to Canadian but itll give u an idea of what its really worth.

Also check your equivalent to a Nickel ad, you'll find a lot better deals in there from private ppl or from smaller dealerships, whathaveyou... it will also broaden the way u look for cars and give you a better idea of whats a good buy.

try online also, ebay might dig something up, or u can try one of the autotrader websites. Im sure ull find a much better deal and people to work with than a groady hairychested pimp chained car salesman. keep up the search and dont give in to something u dont want to! ITS GOING TO BE YOUR CAR, SO BE HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU GET!!!

thnx for the advice, i did look at autotrader.ca
and the prices were actually more than what i was about to pay.
so from those prices 15200 seemed like a good deal (without tax 15%)
cool so now i don't feel like i should have bought the car for the price
i was pretty sure we could get it cheaper
thnx for the reassurance

Talking them down 1K is easy. I almost had a new leftover 2002 Diamante for 19K. I told them that if they would let it go for 19K I would buy it they stopped at 20K for a left over. I walked out the door. They called me back after I bought the MSP. Thats like 8K off the MSRP.

another note... try to get a price out the door. meaning taxes, fees, registration included in the price u offer. you'll save a lot of money that way.

hope that helps some.
