How much will a new advanced keyless key + programming cost?

Hey all,
Just bought a pre-owned 2008 CX-9 GT. After all of the paperwork was signed and I am ready to leave the lot, the salesman hands me 1 keyless fob. I asked where the other one was and he said that they never got one. He mentioned that they are around $550 but he might be able to give me a deal for $330. I've seen that they sell for $100 on ebay, but I don't know what programming would run me. I was just wondering if anyone knows what a new fob + programming should cost from the dealer? Even the "deal" price of $330 seems really steep.

Me again.
You can't program the second key by yourself.
Dealer has to do that. You can buy the key from eBay (but you have to be careful to get the new and right one),
and let dealer program it for you. However, not easy to say how much that would save you.
I'd say $330 is a good deal.
As I said in other thread, if unfortunately you lose the only key you have, it will cost you at least $800 plus to get any new key.
There is a specail 5 digit codes associated with the key (there is a tag that came with new CX9). When that is lost,
it will need a new ECU + two new keys + programming. You can see how this will run for $1000.
BTW, this is not just for MAZDA. It is the same for all new smarkKey systems on all brands if available.

Thanks Eric. The salesman said as I was leaving "Let me see what I can do for you". I am a little peeved as if I had known before finalizing the deal I would have negotiated that in. I will see what he has to say.

I had just about the exact same thing happen to me!

I test drove the car, cut the deal and was ready to wrap it up. Since it was past closing time, the finance guy said we could finish the next day so they threw a dealer plate on my CX9 so I could just take it home. We made arrangements to come finalize everything the next evening. Right before leaving, I asked the salesman about the fob, and he said they "might not" have it. I told him I needed two keys or it was a deal-breaker.

The next morning, I left voice mails on the salesman's and the finance guys lines. I simply said: "This is Mr3Putt, I just wanted to let you know that I was serious about the other key and fob, if you're not going to come up with it, it is a dead deal".

While I was in the shower the salesman left this voice mail on my phone: "This is Ed at the dealer. I spoke with the manager, that key will cost us $400. Since you got such a deal on your car we just can't supply it to you for free, yada, split the cost, yada, yada....."

I called back and left another voice mail that matter of factly said: "Ed, Mr3Putt, sorry it didn't work out. I'll be over between 3-5. Make sure the keys to my Murano are with the receptionist. By the way, if that key costs a Mazda dealer $400, what do you think it would cost a consumer"?

Fifteen minutes later my phone rings, I answer, Ed says: "You win, we'll get you another key". I replied, "Key and Fob, exactly like the one I have.". I told him it wasn't a win or lose scenario, I was just not budging on what should be a no brainier.

I have the equivalent of a promissory note signed by the dealer. I guess they have to order the fob and key based on the VIN. It should be in this week. Then I'll be able to program some back up keys.

I hope it works out for you Cobra. I fear some of your leverage is gone since you signed the deal. If there's some sort of rescission or cooling off period in your state, maybe you can threaten to return to car.

This whole thing brings to mind the question.... Where the hell are all missing these fobs at?

I have bought 2 of them on eBay. My dealer charges I believe 80 bucks for their time. One advanced card I bought new on eBay with a knockoff uncut aux key for 80 bucks, and the other I did the "make and offer" for 60 bucks which the seller accepted, for a new advanced card with a new uncut knockoff aux key.

I "acquired" a brand new, new style advanced fob and then learned I couldn't program it for my 08' CX-9 (only the credit card size advanced card has the correct fcc id) so I sold it on ebay and it sold for only 10 dollars, someone got a heck of a deal on that one.

with eBay, you do have to be careful, alot of times they will have a picture of a unit that is not the actual one you receive, so look out for the fine print.
I only buy the ones that actually have a picture of the exact unit being sold, on the listing. Alot of them will come with a new uncut aux key, but if not, or if they come with a used aux key that's already cut, just buy a new aux key from the dealer for 30 bucks.

I asked Mazda to cut my new aux keys with a laser cutter and they looked at me like I had 2 heads, so needles to say, only the factory can laser cut new aux keys unless you can find a good locksmith that has a laser cutter.

But like I said, after you buy the unit on eBay, the dealer should only charge you for one hour of labor.

You can make a physical key w/o RFID inside, but you can't use it to turn the ignition cylinder.
You can open the doors only.
