How many people and using winter tires in VA

I know it still a few months away but I'm trying to plan ahead so I can save some money if I have to. So how many of you are switching tires for the winter months. I know we don't get that much snow here anymore but this will be my frist car in about 5 years I'm coming out of an SUV. I do a lot of snowboarding so I'm in the mountains a fair amount. I live in the Richmond area so i don't really have to worry about snow to much around home. If you guys do recommend a differnt set of tires what should I get? Should I stay with the stock rims or just get a new wheels and tires?(help)
