How many Brits? Fancy a cuppa?

How many buses, trucks and bicycles overtook you? :-)
But seriously, that's impressive. How many miles do you have on the clock just now?
Some of the roads in mid-Wales around Rhayader and Builth Wells are just wonderful for their beauty and comparative lack of traffic.

Currently on a holiday tour of California, Arizona and Nevada and interesting to see the CX5 is quite popular over here, especially in white.

I have 19.5K on the clock. My problem was catching up to the cars in front and no safe place to overtake. Yup builth wells and llandridnod are great in the cx-5 although it was getting to dark to enjoy it. Only a merc got past and that was on the only straight bit of road on the way home!

On another subject i find that my 2013 cx5 2.2d 175 sometimes when starting from cold goes straight up to 2000 rpm which goes against my mechanical sympathy. There doesn't seem to be any one set of conditions to make it do it, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I usually slam it straight in R or D which knocks the revs down again but sometimes i can hear a few milli-seconds of a rattle before the oil gets around, is this a common problem and has anybody had a cure (probably a software update).

Its common Mazda claim its to warm up the cat.

"Thank you for your recent email.
Having discussed your concern with our Technical Department, I can advise the following:

High idle speed is a normal function of the SkyActiv Diesel engine on start up, and is not related to any PCM updates; this has always been a feature of this engine.

After a cold start, the regulating valve and the wastegate valve are fully open to enable the exhaust gas to flow through the turbochargers without losing much exhaust gas heating capacity. Also the VVL mechanism slightly opens one exhaust valve per cylinder during intake stroke in order to recirculate a certain amount of high temperature exhaust gas back to the cylinder.

This is for early activation of the catalytic converter and improved exhaust gas purification. This does not indicate defect of the parts.

Operating Requirement
1. Water temperature (ECT) at engine starting: from 15 to 32 degrees Celsius.

Intake air temperature (IAT) at engine start: from 15 to 35 degrees Celsius.

Barometric pressure at (BARO) at engine start: from: 91 to 200 kPa.

2. Gear position: P, N, D with the engine idling (Accelerator pedal not depressed)

This is mentioned in the owner’s manual

<Owner’s Manual>

This concern is mentioned in the O/M “When Driving Start/Stop Engine” as follows:.

After starting a cold engine, the engine speed increases and a whining sound from the engine compartment can be heard.

This is for improved exhaust gas purification and does not indicate defect of the parts.

In closing, I trust the above information clarifies your Mazda CX-5 is operating as intended.

Yours sincerely

Jon Haywood-Smith

Thanks for that, still doesn't seem right revving the engine when the oil hasn't got around though.

My car had its second service today with approx 25k miles on the clock.... Cost was 197.00 which I thought wasn't too bad, however I also needed new front brake pads installed which was another 110.00.

Has anyone else needed new front pads at only 25k miles? If so, how much were they?

Not at 25k, but just had the 37.5k service (270) and have been told that front brakes are 75% worn and the rears 60% worn. They quoted 180 for the fronts and 150 for the rears which I thought sounded expensive, and your 110 quote backs that up.

About to hit 60,000 miles and still on my original front brakes and disks! Rears on the other hand I had to replace 10,000 miles ago as friction material had sheared off one of the pads!

First post from a first time Mazda owner here in the UK. I've been a Toyota man through and through but decided it was time for a change of car and when I looked at the crossover market, my head said 1 year old Qashqai to save myself a load of dosh but my heart screamed for a new CX-5. So here we are, 2 weeks ago took delivery of a new soul red 2.2 SE-L NAV.

So far, everything is great! Lovely smooth drive (been using petrol till now and thought diesels would be like driving a truck). Think it's turned quite a few heads out on the street so far.

My only niggles are:
Lack of storage space - only one glove box and one cup holder is a bit lame, but its not a deal-breaker
Would prefer a bit more leg room in the back, and would happily sacrifice that for a bit less boot space but again not a deal-breaker

I did add a few extras, the most significant of which is daytime LEDs - although I do wonder whether they would look better higher up as a wrap around the bottom of the main headlights? Maybe something for the next edition.

Anyways....hello, and it's good being a Mazda owner!

Welcome to Mazda, the forums and especially the British part. We are slowly increasing our numbers.

You probably missed the early days type of niggles (Oil levels, Wobbly Mirrors, Rattles & Live Traffic) As with anything new and perhaps radical would have been inevitable and are now more or less behind us.

You might find as with the post 2013 models if you use the USB drive will probably revert to track one every time you switch off then on the ignition/power. Was OK on the 2012 versions however.

Mazda are allegedly looking at a fix, but reading the posts in that section not looking to hopeful.

Thanks. Not used the USB yet (was thinking of using it as a phone charger actually) but another niggle I forgot to mention above is the Bluetooth pick up of my phone contact book and music. Now this is something quite annoying. It takes 5 minutes to pair every single time I get in the car!

You only get traffic it people have just joined or having problems.

Being quite is a good sign, in fact I would say now is the best time to buy a CX-5.

When I had an xtrail very little was posted on the owners web site, enough said.

I logged in Friday 24th first time in a few days and a Mal-Ware warning flashed up, so I got out quick!

My test drive experience of the following vehicles

I booked test drives with three car manufactures these where the following
1 Lexus NX hybrid this is my experience the car has character its styling is very pleasing to the eye interior is well designed with quality material.Thats where it ends the hybrid part only works upto 30 mph totally useless if your commute is on A roads the power unit and auto gear box seems not in sync when accelerating engine revs but auto box does not transfere power.
2 Mitsibishi outlander PHEV not a fan of the shape when looking in the boot they have side covers over rear wheel arches with cup holders in basically manufactured to fit previous model with 7 seats.
Interior was middle of the road lots of plastic trim no spare wheel and yes no room to fit a space saver.
The drive was very nice and a lot of thought has gone in to the regeneration side of the vehicle the car will use electric upto 70 mph and you can set regenerating braking to three levels. Range is 40 miles on a charge when
When I done the maths on price it was lexus money for a Mitsibishi what would I prefer on the drive.
3 Vauxhall Ampera had this for three days on test drive cost 22k from pentagon four seats reasonable boot space for a mid size car for me the car was to low for me the drive was very good around town and had quite a number of comments from other people .Engine noise at 70 + can be noisey when battery power has been depleted the engine drives a generator on this model so electric motors drive this model the return was 86 mpg for my 82 mile commute to work on single charge the car is very quirky lots of displays on dash and from out side looks are very good.

Must admit I had a serious look at the Lexus NX at the BBC CarFest earlier this year and have had numerous discussions with the local dealer since. The only thing I haven't done is drive one though I have now decided against any change. The NX looks much smarter, has a far superior (but less spacious) interior and is very well equipped but ultimately I don't think it stacks up as a driving machine.

All the press commentaries have mentioned the lack of sync between the engine and gearbox and I can't see that there is any performance advantage against my 150bhp diesel. Real world economy is estimated at 30-35 mpg against the 48-50 I am getting at present and in terms of running costs overall I think the CX5 has it beaten on every measure. Boot space is important to me and even on that count the NX fails.

Yes, it's more premium, the opulent interior leaves the CX5 for dead but ultimately for the type of driving I do it's going to cost me more to run and won't perform or handle as well so the CX on my drive can sleep easy at night since I have no plans to change just now. In fact it's hard to think of another similar SUV I would prefer.

Mind you if Nissan put something a little more beefy into its XTrail the Mazda might have cause to worry

Yes the current diesel option is a bit anaemic.

I was in an Audi Q5 the other day. Nice but a bit pricey for what you get. I realised that its actually pretty close to the CX-5 in terms of size and I'm a little bewildered with motoring publications that continue to compare the CX-5 with the Q3 which is a much smaller car.

The Lexus NX is another car that's pretty close dimensions-wise but is silly-money.

Has anyone put winter tyres on their Cx-5? If so, what have you gone for? There aren't many to choose from in the 225/55r19 size, only Yokohama and Vredestein really.

Can you change size slightly, there seems to be much more choice in the 235/50 r19 size

Buy a set of 17" wheels much more choice

In an ideal world I would have a set of 17" wheels with winter tyres in addition to running the 19s with summer tyres, but I don't.

Two tyres on the 19s need replaced now, and as it's coming up to winter I may as well buy 4 winters and save the two summer ones that are ok.

Has anyone put winter tyres on their 19s, and if so what did you go for?

Cheers

Since your summer tyres need replacing why not fit All Season tyres. I am using separate sets of summer and winter tyres at present but have decided to go with All Seasons once the summer tyres need replacing.
