do you have to select any special settings? or do you just pair the stereo to the smartphone and once it's connected start playing music on your phone and it will start playing through the speakers? since i tried that but, it only played music through my phone not through the cx9 speakers, am i not selecting the right option to stream the music or something? when i go into the bluetooth menu it only gives me the options to make a phone call. how do i stream music? also do i have to open a specific app to stream the music like the music player? what about if i open google play music is it still supposed to stream it?

thanks

also how come when i hit mode it does not show the option for "aux" it only goes through fm 1, 2, am and cd. how come it's not letting me select aux? also when i press the "aux" button on the stereo it does not do anything, what's wrong?

I have Nav, and with Nav, first you have to pair your phone, and select the musical note to pair for music. Then, you need to select "Source", and choose "BT" on the screen. Then start playing your music on your device.

Aux doesn't run the Bluetooth. I haven't used the Aux yet, but maybe it only goes to Aux if you have a device physically plugged into the Aux jack in the console.

I have the touring model and the bluetooth is only for the phone. If you have an mp3 or 4 player or Ipod type of player you have to plug it into the aux jack in the console storage. and then hit the button to the aux setting.

If you have the base radio, it will not stream via bluetooth. CX-9s with the Bose system and/or Navigation System will stream bluetooth audio. See AD2P on Non NAV system.

Thanks for all the replies. Ok that makes sense it must not have it, dont' know why the sales rep was saying that it could. Although I guess many people confuse it and think if the BT will work with the phone it will also work with music, which isn't the case. So, I will go get an Aux cable and see what the sound quality is like. I was really hoping BT would work for streaming music since I've heard the sound quality is so good. Is there an aftermarket device I can setup with the stereo to stream bluetooth? Or maybe I need to consider just changing out the stereo?

Yeah, Mazda's product literature did not make a distinction with regards to which CX-9 sound system had the BT feature. All of us assumed that BT streaming is available on all models, since it had BT calling. The AUX works pretty well, for the most part, and I don't really miss BT streaming.

If you have BT selected as the source then the Aux shuts off or greys out.
Noticed this the other day when I was looking at the Source page and saw it swap when my phone connected to the audio system.
As far as after market add-ons there are a number of them out there ranging from FM modulated devices to Changing the whole radio out (there is a post on this radio change that is).
As far as options to select I believe there is one in the audio setup menu and I know with my phone that I have one for each of the devices my phone is paired with.
There is a check box on each of my paired devices to allow streaming of music and I have had it come deselected a couple of times with one of my Motorcycle Helmet Audio systems.
Have not had this happen with the CX-9.
The quality is decent and I have had no problems with it, I mostly stream Pandora from the phone but on my last trip was in areas were Cell phone coverage was spotty at best so I streamed the Music I had loaded to the phone and the quality really depended upon the quality that was loaded to the phone.
If you have a Iphone then I believe there is a OEM option for a Iphone hookup thru the radio, do not know if this is Bose radio only or not.

i'm not able to select BT as a source, only FM 1, FM 2, AM, and CD. I just bought an aux cable and going to connect it and hope that it detects the connection and gives me the option to select aux. That was one of my concerns that due to cell phone coverage that it doesn't stream properly or cuts out etc. anyway I'll see how it goes with the aux cable. I don't know if there is a checkbox on my phone to allow streaming or not, I'm on Android does anybody know? Anyway people said that my radio won't stream music via BT so it's kind of pointless now for me to try anything since nothing will work the stereo just doesn't have the capability.

Because many sales reps are clueless and will say anything to make a sale. One of the reps couldn't tell me if there was a multi disc changer if you ordered nav, even though it seemed pretty clear to me from the literature that you couldn't get both. Took him a week to get back to me on it.

I still use a Droid 2 with Gingerbread and a telltale sign to me is that when my Droid 2 paired with the Mazda, I only get the bluetooth headset icon, i.e. Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Bluetooth settings. Under 'Bluetooth Devices', it shows 'Mazda' with a bluetooth headset icon on the right. I could be wrong on this, but I think it would have a different icon if the pairing allowed streaming audio.

my icon looks like an equalizer

Hmm...I'm on Gingerbread and that's what is shown. Does your CX-9 have the Bose system (Type B) radio? Mine is the base Type-A radio.

honestly not sure, how could I find out? I don't think it has the bose system since it's the sport no additional upgrades, just the basic edition

This is the Type A radio, which is what I have:

If your Android phone is not on Gingerbread, it might have a different graphic.

Yes that's the radio I have. I'm not on Gingerbread I think I'm on ICS since it's version 4.0

I too have a android phone (second android).
The way I find out if the check box is there is by going to the bluetooth menu from the settings menu, wireless and network selection, bluetooth settings and then selecting the device from the list of bluetooth devices paired with the phone.
Select the device you want by holding your finger on the device until a menu screen comes up and you should be able to select options.
From the options menu you should see Profiles and there will be Phone use for phone audio and Media Use for media audio.
I'm running Gingerbread.UCLA1 and it is a Note but had the same ability on my Galaxy S1 when I was using that phone.
Would think it would be similar selections on the Droid 2.
I have about 4 or 5 devices paired with this phone as I also use the phone to stream audio and other things to my motorcycle helmet(s).

For sure, your Type A radio does not support bluetooth streaming audio, like mine. The AUX is the only way to connect your media device, if you plan on keeping the radio.
ICS might likely have a different graphic for the bluetooth settings, but try following what jrgmanict stated. My Droid says Phone audio only, no media audio.

Thanks for the navigation path to the bluetooth settings.
